ThinkPad August 14,2007 Hard drive firmware update Utility for 20GB, 30GB, 40GB, and 60GB hard drives Version: A0L2 ======================================================================== What This Package Does ---------------------- This is a hard drive firmware update. This code improves the Error Recovery performance of the drive. This firmware applies to the following systems with 20GB, 30GB, 40GB, or 60GB hard drives: - ThinkPad X40, X41, X41 Tablet Only one file is needed to update the firmware. Users with Microsoft Windows can download and apply the non-diskette release. The software will determine if an update is available and offer the user an option to update. Note: Before running the update, save all unsaved work and close all open applications. If you execute "FWHDL2EF" you will see the normal execution with all of the user prompts and safeguards. In order to handle the LE customer requirements, we have also included an unattended update capabilities. In all cases, the HDD passwords must be removed before the HDD firmware can be updated. Click Start, select Settings, then select Control Panel, then double-click the System icon. 2. Click the Hardware tab, then click Device Manager. 3. Expand the Hard Drives section to view all hard drives in the system. 4. One of the model numbers should read: - 60GB HTC6060G9AT00 - 40GB HTC6040G9AT00 - 30GB HTC6030G7AT00 - 20GB HTC6020G7AT00 Installation instructions ------------------------- FWHDG9EF is a utility Firmware upgrade for 20GB,30GB, 40GB, and 60GB Hitachi Travelstar hard drives. Non-diskette instructions: Note: You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display them on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start a supported version of Windows on the target computer. 4. Make the temporary directory on the hard drive (for instance, C:\Temp) and store the file into the temporary directory. 5. Save all of your work, and close all open programs. (Note: Once executed, this package will automatically shutdown Windows. All unsaved work will be lost.) 6. Click Start, then click Run... 7. In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored the Update Utility. Then press Enter. 8. The package will extract the files necessary to perform the update, and restart into the firmware update environment. 9. The firmware update utility will show the hard drives that are detected. They will be listed in the upper area of the Main Menu. - A blinking mark to the left of the drive listed indicates that an update is required. - No blinking mark to the left of the drive listed indicates that the hard drive has the latest firmware and there is no need to update, or the firmware update is not for your drive. In this release, there is no firmware data other than supported models. 10. Follow the instructions on the screen to update the firmware. <> Do not power off the ThinkPad system during the firmware update process, or your hard drive may not be usable anymore. 11. When the installation is complete, power off your ThinkPad system. Note: Do not restart the ThinkPad system using the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys.
