ThinkPad May. 31, 2005 1.8 inch Hard Disk Drive Firmware Update Utility Release 1 ======================================================================== What This Package Does ---------------------- This utility will examine your system configuration and detect all the 1.8inch hard drives installed. It will then check the firmware revision of the drive and judge whether your system requires a firmware update. If required, it will prompt you to run the appropriate firmware update program for your hard drive. This package provides firmware for the following 1.8inch Hard drives: Model (Manufacturer) | DK1xFA (HGST) Note: A hard drive being updated its firmware by this utility indicates "IBM P/N" at near right bottom corner of a label on a drive. * Relation of hard drive models and diskette names may vary in every release. * x or xx indicates any character(s). * "|" at most left column indicates a new entry from last release. This firmware package is supported on the following ThinkPad systems: - ThinkPad X40, X41 This firmware is language independent and can be used with any language system. The update utility only shows English text. Released Versions ----------------- Release 1 Initial release Summary of Changes ------------------ Where: Release (for example, 1 means Release 1) <1> FW180101 Initial release - Support for ThinkPad X40, X41 - If you encounter POST error message "2010" when a DK1xFA installed in your ThinkPad X41, please apply this firmware update. ERROR 2010 :Warning: your internal hard drive may not function correctly on this system. ensure that your hard drive is supported on this system and that the latest hard drive firmware is installed. - Version A0B7 for DK1xFA (HGST) Installation Guide ------------------ Important Notice: Please REMOVE hard drive password. Otherwise firmware can't be updated with error message. Note: This utility is a bootable diskette based program, so you need to prepare an FDD for your ThinkPad. Please consult with documentations accompanied with your ThinkPad system. If you encounter a problem attaching an FDD to your ThinkPad, please call your local Help Center. - Each diskette is bootable and is made to automatically start the firmware update utility which inspects your HDD and indicates the correct diskette number (FW18nnnn) to boot with. - Each diskette contains several executable files other than FW.EXE. DO NOT RUN THESE PROGRAMS. Running these programs other than FW.EXE could ruin your hard drive. 1. Close all open applications 2. Click the FW180101.EXE link to download the file from the Web page. 3. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. 4. Run the file you downloaded to create the first bootable diskette. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen to create the diskette. 6. When the diskette has been created, place the diskette in the ThinkPad system that has the HDD to be updated. 7. Boot the system from the diskette. The firmware update utility will show all of the HDDs that are detected. They will be listed in the upper area of the Main Menu. -A blinking mark to the left of the drive listed indicates that an update is required. -No blinking mark to the left of the drive listed indicates that the HDD has latest firmware and there is no need to update, or the firmware update is not for your drive. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen to update the firmware. <> Do not power off the ThinkPad system during the firmware update process, or your hard drive may not be usable anymore. 9. When the installation is complete, remove the firmware update diskette from floppy disk drive and power off your ThinkPad system. Note: Do not restart the ThinkPad system using the ctrl-alt-del keys.
