IBM ThinkPad 600X May 10, 2000 Reassign Utility for COM Port name of Serial port and Internal Modem Version 1.0 ====================================================================== What This Program Does ---------------------- This program is used to reassign the COM Port Name (ex. COM1,COM2,...) for the serial port and Internal Modem. This program changes the serial port to COM1 and the internal modem to COM2. This program supports the following ThinkPad computers: - ThinkPad 600X Release Information --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Reference) Program version New function or enhancement Correction to existing function <1.00> - First Edition for ThinkPad 600X Installation instructions ------------------------- Note 1: This program needs the PS2.EXE of "IBM ThinkPad DOS Utility." Before using this program please confirm that the "IBM ThinkPad DOS Utility" is already installed. To confirm whether "IBM ThinkPad DOS Utility" is installed or not, 1. Start Windows 98. 2. Click Start, point to Program, and click MS-DOS Prompt. 3. Type "PS2 ?" (without the double quotes) If you see the Help menu of "IBM ThinkPad DOS Utility", then PS2.EXE is installed correctly. Otherwise you must install the "IBM ThinkPad DOS Utility". Note 2: If the resource setting of one of the "COM"-related devices (Serial port, Modem, IBM ThinkPad Fast Infrared Port) is not set to automatic in Device Manager, this program will not work properly. Change the resource setting of all the "COM"-related devices to automatic. If you have installed a PCMCIA Modem card, detach it before running this program. You can check the Automatic setting as follow for each devices: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the System icon. 3. Select the Device Manager tab. 4. Click the "+" mark next to "Ports (COM & LPT)" to show the "Communications Port" devices. 5. If you do not use the "Communications Port"(Serial port) and it is disabled (Red cross mark on this device), goto Step 9 section. 6. Double-click on "Communications Port". A Property window appears. 7. Select the "Resources" tab. 8. Confirm that there is a checkmark in the check box for the automatic setting. If there is no checkmark, check it to enable automatic configuration, then click OK. 9. Click the "+" mark next to "Modem" to show the "Lucent Win Modem" device. 10. Double-click "Lucent Win Modem". A Property window appears. 11. Select the "Resources" tab. 12. Confirm that there is a checkmark in the check box for the automatic setting. If there is no checkmark, check it to enable automatic configuration, then click OK. 13. Click the "+" mark next to "Network adapters" to show the "IBM ThinkPad Fast Infrared Port" device. 14. If you do not use Infrared function and it is disabled (Red cross mark on this device), goto Step 18. 15. Double-click "IBM ThinkPad Fast Infrared Port." 16. Select the "Resources" tab. 17. Confirm that there is a checkmark in the check box for the automatic setting. If there is no checkmark, check it to enable automatic configuration, then click OK. 18. Press the "Close" button to close the "System Properties" window. 19. If you change any settings of the above steps, restart the system before using this utility. If the PS2.EXE file is on the system and all communication ports are set to automatic, do the following the apply this patch: 1. Start Windows 98. 2. Download the COMCFG.BAT file to "C:\" 3. Click Start, point to Program, and click MS-DOS Prompt. 4. In the Command Prompt window, type "C:\COMCFG.BAT" (without the double quotes) and press the Enter key. If the file was downloaded to a different location, specify that location instead. The following message is displayed and the program ends. -------------------------------------------------------------- Serial A Port Setting = COM1 Internal Modem Port Setting = COM2 -------------------------------------------------------------- Finish! Please reboot the system twice.... -------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Type "Exit" (without the double quotes) and press the Enter key to close the MS-DOS Prompt. 6. Restart the system twice. Note : Please restart Windows 98 twice. The internal modem is changed to COM2 after second reboot.
