Installation Instructions ------------------------- This driver can be installed with the ThinkPad Software Installer, or by following the instcructions in the next section. In both cases, please confirm that the driver is correctly installed, by determining the installed driver version as described below. Clean installation: 1. Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP. 2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive. 3. Click Start, then click Run. 4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen. 6. Click Finish and Reboot the system when prompted in order to complete the installation. Upgrading or reinstall: NOTE: Remove any previously installed driver using the uninstall step in the next section. 1. Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator for Windows 2000/XP. 2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive. 3. Click Start, then click Run. 4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK. 5. If the dialog box appears, select Reinstall or Update and then click Next. 6. Click Finish to reboot the system and complete the installation. Unattended installation (Windows 2000/XP): This is for system administrators' use only. Do as follows in the step 4. of the Clean Installation procedure above: 4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE -S -SMS in the Open box and click OK. Uninstalling the driver ----------------------- 1. Start Windows 2000/XP and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator. 2. Depending on the operating system choose one of the following paths: a. If Windows 98SE/2000, Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel. b. If Windows XP, Click Start, then click Control Panel. 3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. 4. Click SoundMAX, then click Change/Remove (or Add/Remove). 5. Select Remove or OK, then click Next or OK. 6. Click Finish or OK and reboot the system to fully uninstall the drivers. Determining which version is installed -------------------------------------- Windows 98SE/2000 1. Start Windows. 2. Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel. 3. Double-click System. 4. Click the Hardware tab at the top of the System Properties window for Windows 2000. 5. Click Device Manager. 6. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section. 7. Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio. 8. Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties. 9. Click the Driver tab. 10. Click Driver Details. 11. For Windows 2000: Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys, to display the version number, where C:\winnt is the location the OS is installed. (Confirm the last 4 digits are 3600) For Windows 98SE: Select C:\windows\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys, to display the version number, where C:\windows is the location the OS is installed. Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and select Properties. 10. Click the Driver tab. 11. Click Driver Details. 12.
