IBM ThinkPad June 18, 1998 ThinkPad Modem 56Kbps (x2) Upgrade and Modem Country Update for Windows NT Version 1.20 ====================================================================== What This Program Does ----------------------- This is a 56K (x2) upgrade program that will improve the performance of the ThinkPad Modem for Windows NT version 2.35, and will allow you to use your Internal ThinkPad Modem in different countries. The following models are supported: - ThinkPad 600 Limitation ---------- - 56K support Your Modem contains 56K technology (56000bps). To take advantage of your modem's 56K technology, you must first make sure that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) supports a 56K modem protocol. 1. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and determine which 56K modem protocol they use. 2. Determine which 56K modem protocol your modem supports. To view your modem's supported protocol(s), do the following: A. Click the Start button, select Programs then select ThinkPad Modem. B. Click Modem. C. Choose Options from the Modem Status Window then choose Settings. D. The available transfer speeds are displayed. The 56K protocol(s) your modem supports is listed in parenthesis following the 56000 bps transfer setting. E. If no 56000 bps transfer setting is listed, your modem's 56K technology is not currently enabled. 3. Your modem and your Internet Service Provider (ISP) must support the same 56K protocol or your maximum connection speed will be limited to V.34 technology. Significantly higher Internet modem connection speeds up to 56K (56000 bps) require all-digital transmission connections from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to the line card in the central office to which your phone line is connected. The actual rate of reception may be limited by the quality of the your telephone line which may vary from location to location. Current FCC regulations limit the maximum speed for downstream communications to a maximum closer to 50K. While your modem contains 56K technology, maximum connect rates in the receive direction may be significantly less than 56K. Currently, 56K capability is in the receive direction only (from the Internet Service Provider to your local modem). The transmit or send direction (from your local modem to the Internet Service Provider) uses V.34 technology. Note: 56K transfer rates are not available in all locations or countries. You must check with your internet service provider to determine if your area is capable of 56K transfer rates. - Windows Dialer This application is not supported.
