Obtain the additional package, BIOS Version 1.48 (or higher), and update the BIOS in the system with it. - If you need to update the BIOS as well as the Embedded Controller Program, update BIOS first. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. What This Package Does ---------------------- This Embedded Controller Program Update Utility updates the embedded controller firmware stored in the ThinkPad computer to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following systems: - ThinkPad R51e The supported operating systems are as follows: - Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional) - Windows 2000 To determine if you should update the Embedded Controller Program, refer to the Summary of Changes section. To update the Embedded Controller Program, refer to the Updating Embedded Controller Program section. (Initial release) Updating Embedded Controller Program ------------------------------------ Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the Embedded Controller Program in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the Embedded Controller Program. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. Automatic installation: - Use Software Installer version 3.01.0503 or higher. Software Installer will check both the installed program on your ThinkPad and our Web site, then download and update the program automatically if a newer version is available. Manual installation: 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows XP/2000 and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Make a temporary directory on the hard drive (for instance, C:\Temp) 5. Download the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory. 6. Click Start, then click Run. 7. In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored Embedded Controller Program Update Utility. (e.g. C:\Temp\78HJ02US.EXE) and then press the Enter key. Note: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\78HJ02US.EXE -s -a -s) The Embedded Controller Program is updated without any user interaction. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this Embedded Controller Program update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." 9. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 10. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 11. Select Update Embedded Controller program and follow the instructions on the screen. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the system until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the system while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Do the following to make sure the Embedded Controller program is updated correctly. 12. Turn on the system. 13. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower left of the screen, press the Access IBM button. 14. Select Start setup utility. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you type in the password. 15. Verify the Embedded Controller Version. Embedded Controller Program Information --------------------------------------- Each version of the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility contains the following Embedded Controller Program. Also the supported BIOS versions are shown below. The versions of Embedded Controller Program and BIOS can be viewed by running ThinkPad Configuration from your operating system and then selecting the System Information button, or by entering BIOS Setup Utility. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer.
