Installing OS/2 Warp on the 755 This section describes how to install OS/2 Warp and the ThinkPad device drivers on the ThinkPad 755 computers. Your installation will differ, depending on whether you use the Dual Boot or the Boot Manager for switching between OS/2 Warp and DOS. Which type are you going to use? Dual Boot Go to "Installing OS/2 Warp with Dual Boot." Boot Manager Go to "Installing OS/2 Warp with the Boot Manager" on page 1-4. Installing OS/2 Warp with Dual Boot When you install OS/2 Warp with Dual Boot, do the following: 1 If DOS and Windows are not installed in the computer, install DOS and Windows with the ThinkPad device drivers for both DOS and Windows. Refer to the ThinkPad User's Guide and the documentation that came with the operating systems. 2 Install OS/2 Warp. Refer to the documentation of OS/2 Warp. Page - 1-4 -- Important ---------------------------------------------------- During installation, pay attention to the following: o Select [VGA] as [Primary Display] at the [System Configuration] screen. o Do not select [PCMCIA Feature] at the [System Configuration] screen. Leave it [No Support Installed]. o If you use the 755CD computer: - To install OS/2 Warp using the internal CD-ROM drive, go to "Installing CD-ROM Version of OS/2 Warp on the 755CD" on page 1-14. - Select [Non-Listed IDE CD-ROM] as CD-ROM at the [System Configuration] screen. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Note: If you have the OS/2 Warp 3.0 FixPak WFP_05 (XR0W005), install it after you complete the installation of OS/2 Warp. Follow the instructions in the README.1ST file in diskette 1 of that FixPak. 3 Go to "Installing the ThinkPad Device Drivers for OS/2 Warp" on page 1-6. Installing OS/2 Warp with the Boot Manager When you install OS/2 Warp with the Boot Manager, do the following: 1 Install the Boot Manager, referring to the chapter describing advanced installation in the User's Guide to OS/2 Warp . 2 Install DOS and Windows with the ThinkPad device drivers for both DOS and Windows. Refer to the ThinkPad User's Guide and the documentation that came with the operating systems. 3 Install OS/2 Warp. Refer to the documentation of OS/2 Warp. Page - 1-6 Installing the ThinkPad Device Drivers for OS/2 Warp After the installation of OS/2 Warp is complete, install ThinkPad device drivers for OS/2 Warp. Restart OS/2 Warp before installing the device drivers. Installing the ThinkPad System Management Device Driver 1 Start OS/2 Warp. 2 Insert the ThinkPad Utility Diskette into the diskette drive. 3 Open the [System Setup] folder in the [OS/2 System] folder. 4 Select [Device Driver Install]. 5 Click on the [Install] button. 6 Select [ThinkPad System Management Device Driver] and click on the [OK] button. 7 Leave the ThinkPad Utility Diskette in the diskette drive. Installing the ThinkPad Features Program 1 Open the OS/2 command prompt. 2 Type A: and press Enter. 3 Type INSTALL2 and press Enter. 4 Follow the instructions on the screen. 5 After the installation is complete, remove the diskette, shut down OS/2, and restart the system. Page - 1-7 Installing the PCMCIA Device Drivers 1 Start the OS/2 Warp. 2 Insert the ThinkPad PCMCIA Features Diskette into the diskette drive. 3 Open the OS/2 command prompt. 4 Type A: and press Enter. 5 Type PCMINST2 and press Enter. 6 Follow the instructions on the screen. -- Important ------------------------------------------- Use the PCMCIA device drivers in the ThinkPad PCMCIA Features Diskette even if the newer ones had been installed in the computer by the OS/2 Warp installation. -------------------------------------------------------- 7 After the installation is complete, remove the diskette, shut down OS/2, and restart the system. Page - 1-8 Installing the Mwave Support Software 1 Start the OS/2 Warp. 2 Make sure that the System Management Device Driver is installed in your computer. Note: To install the System Management Device Driver, refer to "Installing the ThinkPad System Management Device Driver" on page 1-6. 3 Follow the instructions in the OS/2 section of "Installing the Mwave Support Software" in the ThinkPad User's Guide. Notes: o MMPM/2 has been installed in the computer with OS/2 Warp. -- During Installation ------------------------------------------ When you are asked the path for Windows, enter the drive and directory where Windows is installed (for example, C:\WINDOWS). ----------------------------------------------------------------- 4 After the installation is complete, remove the diskette, shut down OS/2, and restart the system. Installing the Infrared Support Software 1 Start the OS/2 Warp. 2 Insert the ThinkPad Infrared Features Diskette into the diskette drive. 3 Open the DOS command prompt. 4 Type A:UINSTALL and press Enter. 5 Follow the instructions on the screen. -- Important ------------------------------------------ Select [Install WIN-OS/2 ThinkPad Infrared Driver] when you are asked. ------------------------------------------------------- Page - 1-9 6 If you are going to start the TranXit ** or any other infrared applications that use the ThinkPad infrared device driver from: o The Program Manager window, do the following: a) Click on the Program Manager object in the [Windows Programs] folder or the [WIN-OS2] (fullscreen or window) object in the [Command Prompts] folder with the right mouse button. b) Select [Settings], [Session] and then [WIN-OS/2 Settings]. c) Modify the following setting as shown: [COM_DIRECT_ACCESS] ON Note that Mwave modem support requires COM_DIRECT_ACCESS to be OFF, so you can't use Mwave modem and IR in the same Win-OS2 session. Use separate Win-OS2 sessions for Mwave modem and IR as follows. o A separate object that you have created for the infrared application, do the following: a) Click on the object with the right mouse button. b) Select [Settings], [Session], and then check [Separate Session]. c) Select [WIN-OS/2 Settings] and modify the following setting as shown: [COM_DIRECT_ACCESS] ON 7 After the installation is complete, remove the diskette, shut down OS/2, and restart the system. Page - 1-10 Installing the ThinkPad Display Drivers 1 Start the OS/2 Warp. 2 Open the [OS/2 System] folder and then the [System Setup] folder. 3 Double-click on the [Selective Install] icon. 4 Select [Western Digital** 90C24] (default choice) and click on [OK]. 5 Click on [OK] and then [Install]. 6 When the [Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility] window appears, select [Install Using Defaults for Monitor Type]. 7 Select [OK]. Page - 1-11 8 After the installation is complete, remove the diskette, shut down OS/2, and restart the system. 9 Go to "Installing the Enhanced Video Features (for 755CD only)" on page 1-13. Note: During the installation of this display driver, two files, DISPLAY.LOG and DSPINSTL.LOG, are created in the OS2\INSTALL directory. These files identify the OS/2 system files that have been updated and indicate whether the installation has been successfully completed. The contents of these files might be useful if you need to report an installation problem to IBM. Page - 1-12 (This page is intentionally blank.) Page - 1-13 Installing the Enhanced Video Features (for 755CD only) 1 Turn off the computer and install the diskette drive into the computer. 2 Start OS/2. 3 Install the Enhanced Video device drivers, referring to the instructions in the "Installation for WIN-OS/2 support" section of the README.WIN file in the ThinkPad Enhanced Video Features Diskette. 4 After the installation is complete, remove the diskette, shut down OS/2, and restart the system. You have completed the installation of OS/2 Warp and the ThinkPad device drivers. Page - 1-14 Installing CD-ROM Version of OS/2 Warp on the 755CD To install the CD-ROM version of OS/2 Warp on the 755CD using its internal CD-ROM drive, choose one of the following according to your configuration: o To use the internal CD-ROM drive and the externally attached diskette drive through the optional Port Replicator I, II or Dock I, II: Go to "Using the External Diskette Drive". o To use the internal CD-ROM drive and the internal diskette drive with the capability of switching between them: Go to "Using the Internal CD-ROM Drive and the Internal Diskette Drive" on page 1-16. Important: You need at least 90MB of free space in the hard disk drive. Using the External Diskette Drive 1 Ensure that DOS and Windows are installed in the computer. 2 Insert the Warp CD-ROM into the internal CD-ROM drive. 3 Open the DOS command prompt and change to the drive for the CD-ROM drive. 4 Type CDINST and press Enter. Make the copies of the OS/2 Warp diskettes labeled "OS/2 Installation Diskette" and "OS/2 Diskette 1". Page - 1-15 5 Shut down the system and *TURN OFF THE COMPUTER*. Note that don't use Alt + Ctrl + Del keys to reboot the system. 6 Insert the OS/2 Installation Diskette into the external diskette drive and turn on the computer. 7 When you are prompted to insert OS/2 Diskette 1, insert it into the external diskette drive and the Warp CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 8 Follow the instructions on the screen until the installation is complete. -- Important ---------------------------------------------------- During installation, pay attention to the following: o Select [VGA] as [Primary Display] at the [System Configuration] screen. o Do not select [PCMCIA Feature] at the [System Configuration] screen. Leave it [No Support Installed]. o Select [Non-Listed IDE CD-ROM] as CD-ROM at the [System Configuration] screen. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Note: If you have the OS/2 Warp 3.0 FixPak WFP_05 (XR0W005), install it after you complete the installation of OS/2 Warp. Follow the instructions in the README.1ST file in diskette 1 of that FixPak. 9 Shut down OS/2 and restart the system. Go back to "Installing the ThinkPad Device Drivers for OS/2 Warp" on page 1-6. Page - 1-16 Using the Internal CD-ROM Drive and the Internal Diskette Drive The following terms are used in these instructions: [cd:] CD-ROM drive letter, followed by a colon [c:] Hard disk drive letter, followed by a colon 1 Ensure that you have at least 90MB of free space in the hard disk drive. 2 Ensure that DOS and Windows are installed in the hard disk drive. 3 Insert the Warp CD-ROM into the internal CD-ROM drive. 4 Open the DOS command prompt. 5 Enter the following to copy all the diskette images from the Warp CD-ROM to the hard disk drive: C:\>xcopy [cd:]\os2image\*.* [c:]\os2image\*.* /s C:\>copy [cd:]\diskimgs\*.* [c:]\os2image C:\>copy [cd:]\diskimgs\os2\35\disk0.dsk [c:]\os2image C:\>copy [cd:]\diskimgs\os2\35\disk1.dsk [c:]\os2image 6 Shut down the system and turn off the computer. 7 Replace the CD-ROM drive with the diskette drive. 8 Turn on the computer. 9 Create the "OS/2 Disk 1" and "OS/2 Installation Diskette" as follows: a) Place the label "OS/2 Disk 1" on a blank diskette formatted for 1.44MB and insert it into the diskette drive. b) Enter the following to create the diskette: C:\>cd os2image C:\OS2IMAGE\>loaddskf disk1.dsk a: /f/y Page - 1-17 c) After the diskette has been created, find the following line in the CONFIG.SYS file on the diskette. You can use the E editor supplied with DOS or any other editor. set os2_shell=sysinst2.exe Change the line to: set os2_shell=sysinst2.exe [c:]\os2image Save the CONFIG.SYS file. d) Place the label "OS/2 Installation Diskette" on a blank diskette formatted for 1.44MB and insert it into the diskette drive. e) Enter the following to create the diskette: C:\>cd os2image C:\OS2IMAGE\>loaddskf disk0.dsk a: /f/y 10 Install OS/2 Warp as follows: a) With the OS/2 Installation Diskette still inserted in the diskette drive, restart your system by pressing and holding [Ctrl] and [Alt] and then pressing [Del]. Note: Because your CD-ROM drive is not installed in the computer at this time and cannot be recognized automatically by OS/2 Warp, you need to make OS/2 Warp recognize the CD-ROM drive. b) Follow the instructions on the screen. -- Important ---------------------------------------------------- During installation, pay attention to the following: o Select [VGA] as [Primary Display] at the [System Configuration] screen. o Do not select [PCMCIA Feature] at the [System Configuration] screen. Leave it [No Support Installed]. o Select [Non-Listed IDE CD-ROM] as CD-ROM at the [System Configuration] screen. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Note: If you have the OS/2 Warp 3.0 FixPak WFP_05 (XR0W005), install it after you complete the installation of OS/2 Warp. Follow the instructions in the README.1ST file in diskette 1 of that FixPak. c) When the installation of OS/2 Warp is complete, shut down OS/2 and turn off your computer. d) Replace the diskette drive with the CD-ROM drive. e) Turn on the computer. Page - 1-18 11 Clean up (optional). The previous steps left about 45MB of image files on your hard disk drive. If you plan to reinstall soon, or install to another hard disk drive, you might want to leave the files in place. If you want to remove them to save your hard disk space, do the following: a) Open the [OS/2 System] folder. b) Open the [Drives] folder. c) Open [c:] drive . d) Click on the [OS2IMAGE] folder with the right mouse button to bring up the folders menu. e) Click on the [Delete] menu. f) When you are asked to confirm the deletion, choose [Yes]. Go back to "Installing the ThinkPad Device Drivers for OS/2 Warp" on page 1-6. Page - 1-19 Considerations for OS/2 Warp This section describes how to set up an external display for OS/2 Warp and also describes considerations for using several functions with OS/2 Warp. Setting Up an External Display for OS/2 Warp This section describes how to set up an external display for OS/2 Warp. The procedures for setting an external display attached to your ThinkPad for OS/2 Warp differs, depending on whether you are using the computer with a TFT LCD display or with a DSTN LCD display. For 755CE and 755CD with a TFT Display 1 Turn off the computer and attach the external display to the computer. 2 Start OS/2 Warp. 3 Press and hold [Fn]; then press [F7]. This sets up the computer to display the output on the external display. Note: If you want to use an external display, make sure not to select the LCD on the computer. 4 Open the OS/2 command prompt, and change to the drive where OS/2 is installed. 5 At the OS2 directory, enter the following to back up the SVGADATA.PMI file for the LCD: C:\OS2>copy svgadata.pmi svgadata.int 6 Enter the following to create a new SVGADATA.PMI file: C:\OS2>svga on If you have a wrong display image after this operation, press and hold [Fn]; then press [F7] three times. Page - 1-20 7 Enter the following to back up the new SVGADATA.PMI file for the external display: C:\OS2>copy svgadata.pmi svgadata.ext 8 Open the [System Setup] folder and double-click on the [System] icon. 9 Select your desired screen resolution. 10 Close the [System] window. 11 Shut down OS/2 and restart the system. You have completed the setup of the external display. o To use the LCD on the computer after doing the previous steps, do the following: 1. Select [640x480] as the resolution in the [System Setup] folder. 2. Enter the following at the OS2 directory in the boot drive: C:\OS2>copy svgadata.int svgadata.pmi 3. Shutdown OS/2 and restart your system. 4. Make the LCD on the computer available, using the [Fn] key function (Fn + F7). o To recover a distorted or a blank screen, do the following: 1. Start OS/2. 2. When a small white box appears at the upper left corner on the screen, press and hold [Alt]; then press [F1]. 3. When the [RECOVERY CHOICES] menu appears, press [v] to reset the video display to VGA. 4. Reinstall [Western Digital 90C24] display driver, referring to "Installing the ThinkPad Display Drivers" on page 1-10. 5. Shutdown OS/2 and restart the system. Page - 1-21 For 755CSE with a DSTN Display When you use an external display with your computer, you need to prepare two setup files - one for LCD and another for external display. You have to switch between those two files when: o You attach or detach an external display. o You start or stop the use of High performance mode. To set up an external display, do the following: 1 Ensure that the ThinkPad Features program has been installed on your computer. 2 Open the OS/2 command prompt. 3 Change to the drive where OS/2 is installed. 4 At the root directory, enter the following to back up the STARTUP.CMD file: C:\>ren startup.cmd startup.bak 5 Open the STARTUP.CMD file using the E editor or any other editor and add the following: @START /FS \ OS2 \ SVGA.EXE ON @EXIT Note: If STARTUP.CMD does not exists, make that file using an editor. 6 Save the file. 7 Open the [ThinkPad Features] folder and double-click on [Display]. 8 Check the [High performance] check box and close the [Display] window. 9 At the OS2 directory, enter the following to back up the SVGADATA.PMI file for the LCD: C:\OS2>copy svgadata.pmi svgadata.int Page - 1-22 10 Turn off the computer and attach the external display to the computer. 11 Start OS/2. You will find a OS/2 Desktop window with invalid colors on the external display. 12 Press and hold [Ctrl] and [Alt]; then press [Del] to restart the system. 13 Open the OS/2 command prompt. 14 At the OS2 directory, enter the following to back up the SVGADATA.PMI file for the external display: C:\OS2>copy svgadata.pmi svgadata.ext 15 At the root directory, enter the following to restore the STARTUP.CMD file: C:\>copy startup.bak startup.cmd Note: If you did not make STARTUP.BAK in step 4 on page 1-21, delete STARTUP.CMD file. 16 Open the [System Setup] folder and double-click on the [System] icon. 17 Select your desired screen resolution. 18 Close the [System] window. 19 Shutdown OS/2 and restart the system. Page - 1-23 o To use the LCD on the computer after doing the previous steps, do the following: 1. Select [640x480] as the resolution in the [System Setup] folder. 2. At the OS2 directory, enter the following in the boot drive: C:\OS2>copy svgadata.int svgadata.pmi 3. Shutdown OS/2 and restart the system. 4. Make the LCD on the computer available, using the [Fn] key function (Fn + F7). o When you disable [High performance] by the ThinkPad Features program after doing the previous steps, do the following: 1. Select [640x480] as the resolution in the [System Setup] folder. 2. Enter the following at the OS2 directory in the boot drive: C:\OS2>copy svgadata.int svgadata.pmi 3. Shutdown OS/2 and restart the system. 4. Make the LCD on the computer available, using the [Fn] key function (Fn + F7). o If you often attach or detach your external display, it is recommended that you use the following two files: - Adding the following to the STARTUP.CMD file: @START /FS PMI4TP.BAT @EXIT Note: If STARTUP.CMD does not exists, create it using an editor. Note: You can change the file name of the batch file (PMI4TP.BAT). - Create the PMI4TP.BAT file including the following: @SVGA ON @EXIT Note: You can change the file name of the batch file (PMI4TP.BAT). o To recover a distorted or a blank screen, do the following: 1. Start OS/2. 2. When a small white box appears at the upper left corner on the screen, press and hold [Alt]; then press [F1]. 3. When the [RECOVERY CHOICES] menu appears, press [v] to reset the video display to VGA. Page - 1-24 4. Press and hold [Fn]; then press [F7]. This sets up the computer to display the output on the external display. Note: If you want to use an external display, make sure not to select the LCD on the computer. 5. Reinstall [Western Digital 90C24] display driver, referring to "Installing the ThinkPad Display Drivers" on page 1-10. 6. Shutdown OS/2 and restart the system. Using the PCMCIA Function with OS/2 Warp When you use the PCMCIA Function in OS/2 Warp, use the PC Card Director program for OS/2 Warp. The PC Card Director does not support the OS/2 MVDM environment, so that the following restrictions exist: o Do not install the PC Card Director for DOS from the DOS window command prompt or from the DOS full-screen command prompt. o Do not install the PC Card Director for Windows from the WIN-OS/2 window session or from the WIN-OS/2 full-screen session. o You cannot use the PC Card Director for DOS and one for Windows in the OS/2 Warp environment. o You cannot use any PC Card Enablers for DOS Card Services in the OS/2 Warp environment.
