What This Diskette Does ----------------------- This System Program Service Diskette updates the system program (BIOS) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following system: - ThinkPad X41 To determine if you should update the system program, refer to the Summary of Changes section. To update the system program, refer to the Updating System Program (BIOS) section. This error message appears when firmware level of attached serial ATA hard drive is old. - (Fix) Warning Beep may sound when you eject system from UltraBase X4 even though system is attached to UltraBase X4 with standby state. - (New) Enable some power management feature to extend battery life. - (Fix) Improve the integrated fingerprint reader functionality. - (New) Add new item in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility to initialize template data in the integrated fingerprint reader. Note: New item "Erase Fingerprint Data" is found by clicking Security then click Fingerprint at BIOS setup menu. - (New) Add new item in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility to disable password authentication for the integrated fingerprint preboot authentication. Note: New item "Password Authentication" is found by clicking Security then click Fingerprint. This item is only available when "Security Mode" is seleted as "High". - (Fix) The system may not boot from USB floppy disk drive when the power of Bluetooth is turned on. - (Fix) Some BIOS Setup items are not configured by using Remote CMOS Update Utility. - (Fix) The item "Execution Prevention" in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility is not locked by supervisor password. - (Fix) LCD display may be turned off after entering secondary hard drive password. This symptom may appear on following condition: System with UltraBase X4 should be in standby mode and then attach secondary Hard drive which has Hard drive password. After attaching Hard drive, System resumes from standby mode and password prompt appears and then enter password. LCD display may be turned off just after entering password. - (New) Support for ThinkPad X4 Dock. Note: BIOS and EasyEject Utility need to be updated before you attach the system to ThinkPad X4 Dock. EasyEject Utility needs to be 75U202WW or later. The guide is specified in the X4 Dock User's Guide (P/N 73P4525). <1.17 (74ET47WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (Fix) System may not boot from hard drive intermittently. <1.17a (74ET48WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (Fix) System may not resume from standby state intermittently. <1.18 (74ET49WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (Fix) Adjust performance of system start and resume time on some models. - (Fix) After removing and replacing the backup battery, Client Security Software may not be installed or Test of Security Chip by PC Doctor(DOS) may fail. <1.19 (74ET4AWW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (New) Enhancement of security function at power-on: When the hard disk password is set, regardless of other password settings, Wake On Lan from power off state does not work. Updating System Program (BIOS) ------------------------------ Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the system program (BIOS) in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program (BIOS). - Make sure the System Program Service Diskette is write-protected. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Insert the write protected System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer. 4. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 6. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. Note: If you are updating the system program through the USB external diskette drive, it will take quite a long time to complete reading the system program file, but it is normal. Continue the update. Attention: Do not turn off, suspend the computer or remove the diskette until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Initializing System Program (BIOS) ---------------------------------- BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Make sure there is no diskette in the diskette drive. 3. Turn on the computer. 4.While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 5. Press the F9 key to load default configuration. 6. Select Yes. 7. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 8. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS D0000-D3FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Note: *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D4000-DBFFF But certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
