[New functions or enhancements] ThinkPad X32 is supported. [Problem fixes] Nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check Embedded Controller Version and BIOS Version. 5. Turn off the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: - This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 3.00d (or higher). Obtain the additional package, BIOS Version 3.00d (or higher), and update the BIOS in the system with it. - If you need to update the BIOS as well as the Embedded Controller Program, update BIOS first. - Before using this Embedded Controller Program Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web Site Knowledge Base Article ID 239887. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS Notes: - If you use your computer satisfactory now, it is not necessarily required to update the Embedded Controller Program. Use it as it is. To determine if you should update the Embedded Controller Program, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the Embedded Controller Program. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the Embedded Controller Program in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. There are three ways for installation. (A) Automatic update with ThinkPad Software Installer (B) Manual update (C) Unattended update (A) Automatic Update Use the ThinkPad Software Installer version 3.01.0503 or higher. The ThinkPad Software Installer will check both installed program in your ThinkPad and IBM Web site. Then download and update the program automatically if a newer version is available. Refer to the ThinkPad Software Installer package for details. (B) Manual Update Refer to the Manual Update section. Windows low/critical battery action is disabled. 2. Two batteries are used. <1.01> (1QHT13WW) Note: This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.00b to 2.11. - (New) (Initial release) Support for ThinkPad X31. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MANUAL UPDATE Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. 1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 2. Start Windows 98 or start Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 3. Save the BIOS Update Utility file (e.g. xxxxxxxx.exe) on the Windows Desktop or in the hard disk drive. 4. Double-click the saved file on the Windows Desktop, or start Explorer, open the folder where the file was saved and then double-click the saved file. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this Embedded Controller Program update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad Embedded Controller Program Update Utility screen appears. 6. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 7. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 8. Select Update embedded controller program and follow the instructions on the screen. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Finally delete the file saved in the step 3. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UNATTENDED UPDATE This procedure is intended only for system administrators. At the command prompt, specify the Embedded Controller Program file name with options -s -a -s (e.g. C:\Temp\xxxxxxxx.EXE -s -a -s) and press the Enter key to start installation process. If you have saved the file to a different location, specify the location, instead.
