[Problem fixes] Nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the Press F1 for the BIOS Setup Utility message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES - This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 (or higher). Obtain the additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.03 (or higher), and update the Embedded Controller Program in the system with it. - If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update BIOS first. - Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web Site Knowledge Base Article ID 239887. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS Notes: - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. There are three ways for installation. (A) Automatic update with Software Installer (B) Manual update (C) Unattended update (A) Automatic Update with Software Installer Use the ThinkPad Software Installer version 3.01.0503 or higher. The ThinkPad Software Installer will check both installed program in your ThinkPad and IBM Web site. Then download and update the program automatically if a newer version is available. Refer to the ThinkPad Software Installer package for details. (B) Manual Update Refer to the Manual Update section. (C) Unattended Update Refer to the Unattended Update section. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INITIALIZING BIOS BIOS Initialization is a suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup Utility message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VERSION INFORMATION The following versions of BIOS have been released to date. Note: You can enable this feature by going to the Power Management properties of your network PC Card device under Network Adapter device in the Device Manger, and checking "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" option. <1.05> (1KET44WW) NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 or 1.02. - (Fix) (Windows XP) Some multi-function CardBus cards may not work after resuming normal operation from standby mode. - (Fix) The boot order of the network devices under Startup and Network in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility changes from default if the F9 key to load default configuration is pressed twice. - (Fix) (Windows XP and Windows 2000) If the computer is attached to an UltraBase X3 or Docking Station and the second hard disk drive with a hard disk password is hot- attached while the system is running, a hard disk password prompt for the second hard disk does not appear after the system is restarted. - (Fix) (Windows XP and Windows 2000) If the LCD panel is closed immediately after Fn + F12 keys are pressed to go into hibernation mode, the LCD screen may remain turned off after the LCD panel is opened. - (Fix) The system may hang during system boot or may not be booted from the USB diskette drive if both a USB mouse and a USB diskette drive are attached to the computer. <1.04> (1KET43WW) NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 or 1.02. - (New) Enhancement on password security function. - (New) Compatibility enhancement with SMBIOS access programs. - (New) Function to disable the option ROM of internal Ethernet adapter card, in order to expand usable memory area by DOS. (This can be done by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in IBM BIOS Setup Utility.) - (Fix) (Windows 98) Resume error message may be displayed when the system resumes normal operation from hibernation mode if a USB memory key device is hot-attached/detached to/from the system. - (Fix) (Windows 2000 and Windows XP) The battery remaining percent (hour) becomes shorter than expected in hibernation mode when the AC adapter is detached. - (Fix) (Windows 2000 and Windows XP) The LCD screen may blink twice when the LCD is closed then opened. <1.03> (1KET42WW) NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 or 1.02. - (New) Enhancement on password security function. - (Fix) (Windows XP and Windows 2000) If the system resumes normal operation from suspend mode by starting a program with Scheduled Tasks utility, the system may set wrong date and time. - (Fix) (Windows 2000 and Windows 98) Disablement of SpeedStep function does not work correctly. - (Fix) (DOS) A keyboard state sticks to "SysRq" key pressed. Some Alt key combinations will be ignored. - (Fix) (Windows XP and Windows 2000) If beeps for "Lid close action" is enabled, beeps may sound continuously if the LCD panel is closed while Windows is booted up. <1.02> (1KET41WW) NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 or 1.02. - (Fix) (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98) After the system resumed normal operation from standby mode with the LCD panel closed, the LCD has blank screen when the LCD panel is opened. - (Fix) The boot order of 'Network' device in Startup menu of IBM BIOS Setup Utility becomes last after BIOS update. - (Fix) (DOS) Usable memory size for DOS program becomes smaller about 40 KB when the system is booted with a USB CD-ROM drive. - (Fix) (DOS) Read and write performance of USB diskette drive will go slow when a DOS memory manager like as EMM386 is installed. <1.01> (1KET40WW) NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 or 1.02. - (Fix) (Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0) A resume password prompt is overridden by the Windows Desktop when the system goes into suspend mode and then resumes normal operation by timer or incoming call. - (Fix) (Windows 98) A resume password prompt on the external display screen is corrupted when the system resumes normal operation from standby mode. <1.00c> (1KET39WW) NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 or 1.02. - (New) Support for ThinkPad X30. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MANUAL UPDATE Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. 1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 2. Start Windows 98 or start Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 3. Save the BIOS Update Utility file (e.g. xxxxxxxx.exe) on the Windows Desktop or in the hard drive. 4. Double-click the saved file on the Windows Desktop, or start Explorer, open the folder where the file was saved and then double-click the saved file. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 6. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 7. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 8. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Finally delete the file saved in the step 3. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UNATTENDED UPDATE This procedure is intended only for system administrators. At the command prompt, specify the BIOS Update Utility file name with options -s -a -s (e.g. C:\Temp\xxxxxxxx.EXE -s -a -s) and press the Enter key to start installation process. If you have saved the file to a different location, specify the location, instead. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features. *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility. This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows operating systems. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D4000-DBFFF Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems.
