IBM SoftOff Application/Device Driver (Windows 95 / 98) README File CONTENTS -------- 1.0 Overview 2.0 Installing SoftOff 2.1 User Installation 2.2 Unattended Installation 3.0 Uninstalling SoftOff 4.0 Notes 5.0 Trademarks and Notices 1.0 Overview ------------- The IBM SoftOff Application / Device Driver enables Windows 95 to shutdown properly and power-off in case the power switch is pressed. Normally the computer would immediately turn off if the power switch is pressed. This immediate power off that happens without giving the operating system a chance to properly shutdown would cause a loss of any unsaved data . The operating system might experience problems starting the next time . SoftOff would ensure a proper shutdown of the operating system before the power is turned off . 2.0 Installing SoftOff ----------------------- The device driver can be installed from a diskette or from a hard disk. These instructions assume that the device driver files were downloaded to a diskette. If you are installing from a hard disk, change to the appropriate drive letter (rather than A:), and disregard the steps that refer to inserting or removing the diskette. 2.1 User Installation ---------------------- Under Windows 95 / 98: 1. Start the computer under Windows 95 / 98. 2. Insert the Windows 95 / 98 IBM SoftOff application diskette into drive A. 3. Click on the Windows Start button, click on "Run", type A:\SETUP, and press Enter. 4. Answer the prompts. 5. Remove the diskette from drive A. 6. Shut down and restart the computer under Windows 95 / 98. 2.2 Unattended Installation --------------------------- This installation method requires no user intervention. This information is intended for experienced network administrators. o Make sure the source directory (containing the device driver files) is write-enabled so that a log file, SETUP.LOG, can be created and written to. (A "ResultCode=0" statement in the log file indicates a successful installation.) o The installation program is controlled by parameters contained in the response file, SETUP.ISS. Instructions are contained in the SETUP.ISS file. The following parameters are controlled by the response file: - The target drive and path on the computer where the device driver is to be installed. - Restart control. The installation program automatically restarts the computer to activate the device driver when the installation is complete. You can disable this feature so that you can install other software before restarting the computer. o To start the installation program, type SETUP -S from the source directory. o The computer must be restarted (automatically or manually) to activate the device driver. 3.0 Uninstalling SoftOff ------------------------ To unistall the SoftOff application / device driver under Windows 95 / 98: 1. Click on the Windows Start button, select Settings/Control Panel . 2. From the Control Panel click on the Add/Remove Programs icon . 3. From the "Add/Remove Programs Properties" windows that displays a list of programs, select SoftOff and Click on the Add/Remove button . 4. On the "Confirm File Deletion" windows click on Yes . 5.
