Some of the information deals with devices that may be attached to IBM computers to allow a disabled individual to lead a more independent and productive life. This guide is organized in four sections: INTRODUCTION This section provides a general overview of the disability, including a discussion of how computer technology can improve the employability and quality of life of persons with disabilities. TECHNOLOGY This section lists products which may be used with IBM Personal Computers and the IBM Personal System/2 family of products to adapt the technology for persons with disabilities. SUPPORT GROUPS National agencies, associations and support groups available to persons with disabilities are listed in another guide, "Technology for Persons with Disabilities - an Introduction." Local, state and regional groups are listed in another guide, "Support Organizations." Both of these guides may be ordered from the Center. INDEX The index contains two lists: products and vendors. PLEASE CONTACT THE VENDOR DIRECTLY for more product information. 1 How to Use This Guide 2 How to Use This Guide INTRODUCTION ____________ Speech and language disorders include defects of articulation, voice production and rhythm; cleft-palate speech; delayed speech development; disorders associated with hearing impairments; and impairment of language function. HOW COMPUTERS HELP PERSONS WITH SPEECH AND LANGUAGE IMPAIRMENTS A speech or language disorder is not a detriment to operating a computer. Software and hardware may be modified to compensate a speech disability. A SPEECH SYNTHESIZER connected to a computer or incorporated into the software can be used as a training and teaching aid for the speech-impaired person or as voice output for the non-vocal person. For the non-vocal or speech-impaired person who also has mobility impairments, EYETRACKING SYSTEMS, LIGHT SENSORS, ALTERNATE SWITCHES AND ALTERNATE KEYBOARD DEVICES may serve as communication aids and as alternate input devices to the computer. SPECIAL COMPUTER PROGRAMS have been developed to assist the speech- or language-impaired person to develop adequate articulation or language skills. These special programs assess disorders of speech and language and assist the speech-impaired person to practice speech sound, using the computer as a listener to provide objective feedback on the quality of repetition. COGNITIVE REHABILITATION SOFTWARE identifies and treats cognitive deficits in stroke- and brain-injured persons. This software concentrates on the detection and retraining of language function such as perceptual deficits, memory, categorization, sequencing and association. IBM has provided funds to develop the MICHIGAN MEMORY SERIES of Software, a series which will prove useful for children and students with learning disabilities, communication disorder, reading disorder, autism, mental retardation and other problems. The program will be useful for adults with stroke, closed head injury and other neurological problems. (For more information, see the Michigan Memory Series listing in the product section of the Speech of Language Guide.) Input devices that are self-contained, PORTABLE COMMUNICATION AIDS may be used by the speech-impaired or non-vocal person when a computer is not conveniently accessible. These electronic devices usually have associated synthesizers and may be operated with switches if needed. 3 Introduction TECHNOLOGY __________ Therapy Special computer programs have been designed to assist the speech or language impaired person. These special software programs allow the speech impaired person to practice speech sounds using the computer as a listener providing objective feedback on the quality of repetition. Software programs also assist the professional in assessing disorders of speech and language. PRODUCT: ANIVOX COMPUTER SPEECH SYSTEMS VENDOR: Animated Voice Corporation P. O. It is to be used by rehabilitation professionals in conjunction with standard therapy procedures. THINKABLE was developed by IBM with considerable help from occupational therapists, neuropsychologists, and speech and language pathologists. The purpose of THINKABLE is to provide highly-motivating cognitive practice, using life-like pictures and natural speech. It provides practice in four cognitive areas: o visual attention, o visual discrimination, o short-term visual memory, and o sequential memory. THINKABLE includes over 500 prepared exercises that can be used without modification. However, it gives clinicians the power to develop customized exercises with control over such parameters as: o the types of pictures, numbers, letters or shapes to be used as stimuli o timing variables such as stimulus presentation time and response time o reinforcement schedules o exercise difficulty. THINKABLE is a user-friendly system that allows clinicians to create customized exercises and sequences of exercises for their patients. Once created, these exercises can be used over and over for one patient or several. Prescribed sequence of exercises are implemented automatically. Minimal patient supervision is required during their practice sessions. THINKABLE keeps data on every patient response and saves it in a patient workbook. Graphic and tabular reports show progress over time with regard to speed and accuracy of responses. THINKABLE operates on IBM PS/2 system under the OS/2 Version 1.3 operating system. A touch screen is recommended. 42 IBM Thinkable THINKABLE is available only from The Psychological Corporation. Call 1-800-228-0752 for further information. THINKABLE FEATURES PHOTO-LIKE IMAGES THINKable includes hundreds of pictures of objects which you use in daily living. HIGH-QUALITY SPEECH THINKable uses real speech for student/patient instructions, reinforcement, and guidance. TOUCH SCREEN RESPONSE THINKable allows three response modes: touch screen, mouse, and keyboard. The touch screen allows the most direct method of responding. AUTOMATIC DATA COLLECTION THINKable collects timing and accuracy data from every response and maintains data bases for each user. GRAPHIC AND TABULAR DATA REPORTING THINKable allows teachers and clinicians to select the range of dates as well as exercises for which response-time and accuracy data are reported. COGNITIVE PRACTICE STRATEGIES THINKable includes 16 strategies for practicing fundamental cognitive skills VARIABLE OPTIONS THINKable allows the professional to set parameters to vary: presentation speeds, reinforcement schedules, response contingencies, pre-stimulus cues, pre-response cues, and many more. MENU DRIVEN INTERFACE Easy-to-use menus allow the professional to create custom exercises, create user workbooks, and to prescribe sessions for future use. BASELINE EXERCISES THINKable contains baseline exercises that cannot be modified by the user, thereby allowing for consistent measures over time and exchange of data among different users.
