Aptiva Vital Product Data Update Flash Utility for IBM(R) Aptiva(R) README This package updates the system Vital Product Data (VPD) information on Aptiva computers. Valid VPD information is needed for Update Connector to function properly. This update is intended for Aptiva systems 2137-xx, 2138-xx, 2139-xx, 2153-xx, 2158-xx, 2163-xx, 2164-xx, 2170-xx, 2171-xx, and 2172-xx. Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation. Updating your system's Vital Product Data ----------------------------------------- Updating your VPD involves creating a bootable VPD flash diskette and running the VPD flash program from the diskette. Before you begin, have a blank 1.44 MB diskette ready. To update your systems VPD do the following: Downloading the update ---------------------- 1. Click the file link to download the file from the Web page. 2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. Extracting the update --------------------- 1. Click Start -> Find -> Files and folders. 2. Insert a blank 1.44MB floppy diskette into the diskette drive. 3. Type amjt00a.exe in the search box, then click Find Now. This will locate the amjt00a.exe file you just downloaded. 4. Double-click the icon for amjt00a.exe. 5. Follow the onscreen prompts. The necessary files will be extracted to the diskette. Installing the update --------------------- 1. Close all open applications. 2. Leaving the diskette inserted in the diskette drive, Shutdown and restart your computer. 3. Follow the onscreen prompts to install the VPD update. 4. When prompted, remove the diskette from the diskette drive, and restart the computer. The update is now complete. Testing for successful installation ----------------------------------- Follow the steps below to validate that the VPD has been successfully updated. 1. Remove the VPD flash diskette from the A: drive. 2. Shut down and restart the computer. 3. Press the F1 key when you see the IBM Aptiva start screen. 4. From the System Information Menu use your arrow keys to scroll down and highlight Model Information and press Enter. 5. Compare the Information listed under Machine Type and Serial Number to the Machine Type and Serial Number on the out side of your computer case. 6. If the System Information listed under Model Information matches the Model Type and Serial Number of your computer case you are done. 7. If the information from step 5 does not match please repeat the instructions on updating your system's Vital Product Data.
