The adapter is based on the Extended Graphics Array (XGA). XGA is a new video subsystem for the IBM PS/2 family of Micro Channel (R) products. The PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A is a high performance 32-bit busmaster. It has been designed to be compatible with existing Video Graphics Array (VGA) software applications while offering many new advanced video features for the IBM PS/2 family of Micro Channel products. The video subsystem is an evolution of the VGA and provides the user with enhanced resolution, color content and hardware function. The XGA design has been optimized for use by window managers and other Graphical User Interfaces. The PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A is standard on the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 family of machines. It is also available as an optional display adapter for selected IBM PS/2 Micro Channel products. XGA supports the 14-inch IBM PS/2 Color Display 8515 with its high resolution 1024 x 768 capability, as well as the 16-inch IBM PS/2 Color Display 8514. In addition, other PS/2 monochrome and color displays including 8503, 8507, 8512, 8513 and 8604 can be used depending on resolution and application requirements. COMPATIBILITY: XGA is compatible with existing VGA applications. The XGA Adapter Interface is fully compatible with the 8514/A Adapter Interface. LIMITATIONS: HARDWARE LIMITATIONS: The following restrictions apply to the PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A: o It is not supported in the PS/2 Model P70. o The Action Media 750 Adapter and the Image Adapter/A can only be supported with the PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A in the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 in VGA mode with a suitable display attached to both adapters. o The PS/2 8580-111, 121, 311 and 321 may require a change to the system Planar Board as defined in Engineering Change Announcement (ECA 048). Customers should contact their IBM representative or IBM Authorized Remarketer for information on this requirement. SOFTWARE LIMITATIONS: The PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A is fully compatible with existing VGA applications. The VGA emulation of XGA does however contain some minor differences from the original IBM VGA. The PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A is compatible with applications written to the Adapter Interface of 8514/A under DOS. XGA does not support applications written to the 8514/A hardware registers. XGA is compatible with applications written to the 8514/A under OS/2 Presentation Manager. Applications written directly to the Adapter Interface of 8514/A under OS/2 are not supported. Applications written directly to the XGA Hardware Registers under OS/2 are not supported. The DOS compatibility box of OS/2 Versions 1.2 and 1.3 is supported by the PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A in the VGA modes. It is not supported in the XGA advanced function modes of operation. The following applications are not supported in their 8514/A modes by XGA: o IBM Graphics Workstation Program (superseded by OS/2 Presentation Manager) o IBM DisplayGraphics o Metaphor's Data Interpretation System. LIMULATORS: Any LIMulator used when running DOS Adapter Interface applications must support the Extended Memory Management specification with Physical Address Services. USER GROUP REQUIREMENTS: The PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A addresses the video subsystem requirements requested by IBM user groups. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The customer is responsible for setup of the PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A. Installation instructions are provided with the adapter. CABLE ORDERS: No cables required. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: For customer problem analysis and resolution, the procedures provided with the system unit should be followed.
