IBM AUDIOVATION ADAPTERS IBM Announcement Letter Number 193-355 dated November 16, 1993 IBM US - Last Revised on November 16, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The AUDIOVATION (TM) Adapter (#9129, 60G3878) and AUDIOVATION Adapter/A (#9130, 60G3879) are powerful, single card solutions for multimedia sound applications. These adapters employ a Mwave (TM)-based Digital Signal Processor (DSP), which has been recognized as the next step in bringing multimedia capabilities to the desktop computer. The DSP is programmable and can be easily expanded with quick, cost-effective software upgrades. The AUDIOVATION Multimedia Upgrade Kit (#9131, 60G3880) provides additional capabilities by including a double-speed, multisession CD-ROM player with the adapter. The kit is available with the AUDIOVATION Adapter only. The AUDIOVATION MIDI Pac (#9132, 60G3882) contains a MIDI cable that connects MIDI devices and/or a second joystick to the adapter. MIDI-IN, MIDI-OUT and MIDI-THRU connectors are provided on the cable, as well as the ability to connect up to two joysticks at the same time. The AUDIOVATION Adapter is compatible with Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) computers and the AUDIOVATION Adapter/A is compatible with Micro Channel (R) Architecture computers. The AUDIOVATION adapters support applications written for the M-Audio Capture and Playback Adapter (M-ACPA) if the applications conform to the M-ACPA device driver interface and do not require M-ACPA DSP code. The AUDIOVATION Adapter/A can be attached to the front panel audio connector for PS/2 (R) Ultimedia (R) series systems. IN BRIEF . . . o Powerful, integrated single card solution for multimedia business audio applications o Both Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) and Micro Channel Architecture versions o ISA version also combined with a double-speed, multisession CD-ROM player for a complete upgrade kit o MWAVE-based DSP technology for easy software upgrades o Compatible with Windows (1) 3.1 Media Control Interface (MCI) and DOS applications o Meets minimum requirements for Multimedia Personal Computer (MPC) level-2 audio o Powerful, easy-to-use text-to-speech, voice recognition and MIDI file playback applications included o MIDI synthesis with sampled sound for accurate musical instrument sound reproduction o Three-dimensional like effects to enhance sound from ordinary speakers o Advanced application to provide three-dimensional audio effects: - Record and playback sounds at sampling rates up to 44.1Khz in 8-bit and 16-bit mono and stereo - Real-time 4:1 sound data compression o Playback CD-quality audio from CD-ROM or wavefiles Customer Letter Section ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION The AUDIOVATION adapters provide users with an assortment of options for sound creation and reproduction: o With Windows 3.1, the MCI-MPC-compliant audio drivers offer wavefile record and playback at sampling rates up to 44.1KHz in 8-bit and 16-bit mono and stereo. Users also can record and play 44.1KHz CD audio in 16-bit stereo and even mix CD sound with wavefile playback. o The MIDI 8-voice, 8-note synthesizer uses sampled sound synthesis to provide accurate musical instrument sound reproduction. o The system provides real-time 4:1 sound data compression to greatly reduce the large storage requirements of audio data. o The AUDIOVATION adapters will also run many games written for audio game cards such as Sound Blaster. o The AUDIOVATION adapters provide jacks to connect headphones, speakers, microphone and an external audio source through the line-in jack. A joystick port is also provided. Four applications are offered to realize the opportunities available with the AUDIOVATION adapters: o A Speech Recognition application, Talk-To Plus (2) from Dragon Systems, Inc., that provides an alternative to mouse or keyboard input. Users of Windows 3.1 can navigate the graphical user interface with spoken commands, such as "File Save" and "Font Bold". An active vocabulary of 64 commands changes automatically as applications are started and swapped. Talk-To Plus supports speech recognition in U.S. English only. o A text-to-speech application, Monologue (3) by First Byte, Inc., that translates written text into spoken words. The text-to-speech synthesis engine translates English ASCII text strings into synthesized audio output for various applications, including word processing and spreadsheets. o An application to play MIDI music arrangements, Band-in-a-Box (4) for Windows by PG Music, Inc., enables the AUDIOVATION adapters to play back these songs at near-CD quality performance. o An application that provides three-dimensional sound, QSound (5) by Archer Communications Inc., gives the Mwave sampled-sound MIDI synthesizer incredible three-dimensional effects on ordinary speakers. The AUDIOVATION Multimedia Upgrade Kit contains, in addition to the four applications, the following four CD titles: o Sony Mayo Clinic Family Health o Sony Kodak Photo CD Sampler o Interplay Production Battle Chess Enhanced o New Media Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia. The AUDIOVATION MIDI Pac contains a music sequencer application, POWERTRACKS (4) by PG Music, Inc., which provides the ability to compose and record songs with multiple tracks and instrument sounds. (2) Trademark of Dragon Systems, Inc. (3) Trademark of First Byte, Inc. (4) Trademark of PG Music, Inc. (5) Trademark of QSound Labs, Inc. ENABLING NEW APPLICATIONS The AUDIOVATION adapters provide a powerful, integrated single card solution that complies with MPC specifications for Windows 3.1 MCI and DOS 5.0, and higher environments. Users can record and play back voice or music at sampling rates up to 44.1Khz in 8-bit and 16-bit mono and stereo. Users can also record and play 44.1Khz CD audio in 16-bit stereo and even mix CD sound with wavefile playback. The adapters provide real-time 4:1 sound data compression to greatly reduce the large storage requirements of sound without sacrificing fidelity. The AUDIOVATION Multimedia Upgrade Kit provides access to the rapidly increasing business reference titles along with MPC compliant games. MPC AND WINDOWS 3.1 MCI COMPLIANCE The AUDIOVATION adapters comply with the Multimedia Personal Computer (MPC) audio requirements. The AUDIOVATION adapters run applications written to the Windows 3.1 MCI for audio or its low level wave and MIDI audio services. MUSICAL INSTRUMENT DIGITAL INTERFACE (MIDI) The AUDIOVATION adapters use a MIDI synthesizer to produce 8-voice, 8-note simultaneous sounds from digitally sampled sounds for accurate sound reproduction. Each voice is enhanced by QSound Virtual Audio (5) that provides three-dimensional-like effects on ordinary stereo speakers. INCREASED CAPACITY/PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT The adapters contain a programmable DSP and enable quick, cost-effective software upgrades. OPEN ENTERPRISE 1.
