IBM PS/2 486DX2-66 PROCESSOR UPGRADE OPTION Contents Announcement Letter Number 192-178 dated August 11, 1992 US - Last Revised on August 11, 1992 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The 486DX2-66 Processor Upgrade Option enhances the Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Model 90 XP 486 and Model 95 XP 486 system families. This new upgrade option and its Intel 486DX2-66 microprocessor provide the capability to upgrade processor performance on the PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 (8590-0Gx, 0Hx, 0Jx, 0Kx and 0Lx) and Model 95 XP 486 (8595-0Gx, 0Hx, 0Jx, 0Kx and 0Lx) systems. The 486DX2-66 microprocessor operates at an internal clock speed of 66MHz and an external speed of 33MHz. It includes an internal memory cache controller, 8KB memory cache and an integrated floating-point processor unit. Additionally, the processor complex supports the external Personal System/2 256KB Level 2 Cache Option (#1098, 6451095). The 486DX2-66 Processor Upgrade Option significantly increases system processor performance in compute-intensive applications, providing investment protection to owners of lower performance models of the PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 and Model 95 XP 486 systems. PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 and PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 systems using the 486DX2-66 Processor Upgrade Option can be upgraded by the previously announced IBM PS/2 Enhanced 486/50 Processor Upgrade Option (refer to Product Announcement 192-101, dated April 28, 1992). Upward migration via processor upgrade can be achieved by customers desiring greater processor and system performance. The PS/2 486DX2-66 and Enhanced 486/50 Processor Upgrade Options are net priced, based on the return of the replaced processor complex to IBM. The PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 and Model 95 XP 486 systems provide customers with a wide range of function and hardware designed to meet customer requirements in many different application environments. The common processor complex design of the PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 and Model 95 XP 486 systems helps protect the customer's original investment by allowing a significant performance upgrade in compute-intensive applications as computing demands increase. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The 486DX2-66 Processor Upgrade Option offers PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 and 95 XP 486 customers a new, higher level of system processor performance for server and compute-intensive applications while providing investment protection. USER PRODUCTIVITY The processor upgrade enhances end-user productivity by maintaining hardware and software compatibility with the base system, features and applications. Common user interface enables significant performance enhancements and increased productivity without requiring new system education, commands or unique instructions. PRODUCT POSITIONING The 486DX2-66 Processor Upgrade Option provides maximum investment protection by allowing a user to move easily from any of IBM's currently announced 486 systems to the more powerful 66MHz 486DX2-66 processor complex. The PS/2 486DX2-66 Processor Upgrade Option is appropriate for users and environments, such as CAD/CAM, image and presentation graphics, where high-performance computational capabilities are required. The PS/2 486DX2-66 Processor Upgrade Option replaces the current PS/2 486/50 Processor Upgrade Option (6450757). The Model 90 XP 486 and Model 95 XP 486 systems using the 486DX2-66 may also be upgraded with the Enhanced 486/50 Processor Upgrade Option (#5277, 6451269).
