The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 is designed to support the demand of network servers, multi-user host, and advanced business and technical applications. Built on the Micro Channel architecture, the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 includes a processor complex that contains the 486SX processor chip and associated functions. Also on this complex is a separate 487SX co-processor socket designed for the IBM PS/2 Math Co-Processor 487SX/20-25MHz. This optional feature provides integrated floating point processing. Customers who have numeric-intensive applications can obtain enhanced performance, equal to the full function Intel i486/25MHz processor, through the installation of this feature. Also, the processor complex of these new 486/25MHz entry systems can be easily upgraded to 33MHz, or to the even more powerful 50MHz processor, by replacing the processor complex with one of the PS/2 processor upgrade options. This upgrade feature significantly protects the investment in Model 95 XP 486 systems for customers whose application or performance needs change over time. These processor upgrade options are available for installation by contacting IBM or an IBM Authorized Remarketer. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 provides up to seven file storage bays. Two 3.5-inch bays are used for the 1.44MB diskette drive and the standard SCSI fixed disk drive. Five available 3.5-inch bays can accommodate up to four more SCSI disk drives and one more diskette drive or tape backup drive providing expansion of up to 2GB of internal storage. Various combinations of 3.5-inch fixed disk drives, removable media devices and 5.25-inch full-high drives can be installed, providing flexibility in file storage configurations. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 also provides eight 32-bit Micro Channel I/O slots (one slot is used for the IBM Personal System/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter with Cache and one slot is used for the IBM Personal System/2 XGA Display Adapter/A). The six remaining slots are available for immediate or future expansion and growth, thus providing additional investment protection for the customer. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 systems support up to 64MB of memory on the planar, eliminating the need to consume an expansion slot for memory expansion. COMPATIBILITY: Refer to the LIST OF SUPPORTED PRODUCTS included with this announcement. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 contains licensed System Programs, which include set configuration and features, test, copy an option diskette, backup/restore and update System Programs. These System Programs are stored in a 3MB protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The Initial Machine load (IML) loads the BIOS program from the fixed disk drive into system memory. BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT (TM), Personal Computer AT (R) and the PS/2 family. However, due to the higher speed of the 486SX processor in these new models, some timing sensitive software may require modification. The 486SX processor does not have numeric co-processing capability. Applications designed specifically for the 80387 math co-processor or the 486 with integrated math co-processor function may not run. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 Reference Diskette contains an update program (DISK386.SYS) and an installation program. The update program maintains compatibility between SCSI devices, IBM DOS and some of the following types of programs that assumes the fixed disk drive will utilize the system DMA (Direct Memory Access) controller: o Multitasking DOS programs o Programs written for the 80386 microprocessor only o Programs that use the virtual 8086 mode of the 80386 microprocessor o Programs that emulate expanded memory specification (EMS) in extended memory. The update program should only be installed when applications providing DOS and/or memory extensions fail to work properly. For example, an application may fail to load and return the DOS prompt, or when attempting to access a SCSI device, the system may hang, or the screen may go blank. With this update program installed, a buffer is provided in the first megabyte of system memory, which serves as an intermediate location for data being transferred between the SCSI adapter and the requesting program buffer. While this update program allows applications that utilize the system DMA controller to run, some performance degradation in file access time may be experienced. Only after problems have been experienced, and the performance implications considered, should this program be utilized. The Extended Graphics Array (XGA) is designed to be compatible with applications written to the following interfaces: o IBM VGA hardware interface in all operating environments. There are minor differences between the IBM VGA hardware interface and the XGA hardware support of the VGA interface. However, these differences are not expected to affect any applications. o Adapter Interface (AI) of the 8514/A under DOS. o OS/2 Presentation Manager (R) of the 8514/A. o OS/2 DOS Compatibility Box in VGA modes. XGA does not support applications written to: o 8514/A hardware registers o AI of the 8514/A under OS/2. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. LIMITATIONS: The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 supports a maximum of 64MB of memory, 16MB of which are addressable by Direct Memory Address (DMA). The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 supports 2MB, 4MB and 8MB memory SIMMs (70 and 80 nanosecond only). Refer to the PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS section for operating system limitations. The licensed System Programs include set configuration and features, copy an option diskette, test, backup/restore and update System Programs. These licensed System Programs are stored in 3MB of protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The formatted capacity is therefore reduced by 3MB, and the total user accessible capacity may vary slightly based on operating environments. This protected partition is not affected when the drive is formatted using the Format command provided in DOS or OS/2. The licensed System Programs are also provided on the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 Reference Diskette. The following Micro Channel adapters and options are not supported by the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486: o IBM Personal System/2 Display Adapter 8514/A o IBM Personal System/2 3117 Adapter/A o IBM Personal System/2 5.25-Inch External Diskette Adapter/A (#8760, 6450245) o IBM Personal System/2 High Speed Adapter/A o IBM Personal System/2 1MB Memory Module Kit-85ns (#5212, 6450603) o IBM Personal System/2 2MB Memory Module Kit-85ns (#5213, 6450604) o IBM Personal System/2 80386 Memory Expansion Option 2MB Kit (#3077, 34F3077) o IBM Personal System/2 80386 Memory Expansion Option 4MB Kit (#3011, 34F3011) o IBM Personal System/2 80386 Memory Expansion Option (#3019, 6450367) o IBM Personal System/2 2-8MB 80386 Memory Expansion Option (#5211, 6450605) o IBM Personal System/2 3.5-Inch 2.88MB Slim High Diskette Drive (#1106, 6451106) o IBM Personal System/2 5.25-Inch 1.2MB Internal Diskette Drive (#1006, 6451006) replaced by 6451066 (which does not require an adapter card) o IBM 3117 Scanner o IBM 3118 Scanner o IBM Personal System/2 256KB Level 2 Cache Option (#1098, 6451095).
