IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 486/25 AND 486/33 PROCESSOR UPGRADE OPTIONS Contents Announcement Letter Number 191-052 dated April 23, 1991 US - Last Revised on April 23, 1991 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) 486/25 Processor Upgrade Option enhances the announced Personal System/2 Model 90 XP 486 (8590-0G5, -0G9) and Model 95 XP 486 (8595-0G9, -0GF) by providing additional processor growth capability. The PS/2 486/25 Processor Upgrade Option features the 32-bit Intel i486 (1) processor running at 25MHz on a processor complex which is designed to upgrade the 486SX/20MHz or 487SX/20MHz versions of PS/2 Models 90 and 95. The 486SX/20MHz or 487SX/20MHz versions of Models 90 and 95 can also be upgraded by the IBM PS/2 486/33 Processor Upgrade Option. These processor upgrade options significantly enhance the range of processor performance which customers can now achieve with the expandable processor concept introduced on the PS/2 Model 90 and 95 XP 486 systems. The 486/25 and 486/33 Processor Upgrade Options are supported by Operating System/2 (R) (OS/2 (R)) Standard Edition Versions 1.2 and 1.3, OS/2 Extended Edition Versions 1.2 and 1.3, the Disk Operating System (DOS) Versions 3.3 and 4.0, the Advanced Interactive Executive Personal System/2 (AIX (R) PS/2) Version 1.2.1 and the IBM 4680 Operating System Versions 2 and 3. Upward migration via processor upgrade is allowed for customers desiring greater processor performance. The PS/2 486/25 and 486/33 Processor Upgrade Options are net priced based on the return of the replaced processor complex to IBM. By implementing the Personal System/2 8590 and 8595 family of systems, IBM provides customers with a wide range of function and hardware designed to meet customer requirements in many different application environments. The common processor complex design of the 8590 and 8595 PS/2 system family helps protect the customer's original investment by allowing a significant performance upgrade in compute intense applications as computing demands increase. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The PS/2 486/25 and 486/33 Processor Upgrade Options offer PS/2 Models 90 XP 486 (8590-0G5, -0G9) and 95 XP 486 (8595-0G9, -0GF) customers significant increased system processor performance in compute-intensive applications while providing investment protection. Common user interface enables significant performance enhancements and increased productivity without new system education, commands or unique instruction. TECHNICAL INFORMATION SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: The 486/25 and 486/33 Processor Upgrade Options can be installed in PS/2 Model 8590 and 8595 systems only in the specified processor complex slot on the system board. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: The following operating systems support the PS/2 486/25 and 486/33 Processor Upgrade Options: o OS/2 Extended Edition Versions 1.2 and 1.3 o OS/2 Standard Edition Versions 1.2 and 1.3 o DOS Versions 3.3 and 4.0 o AIX Version 1.2.1 o IBM 4680 Operating System Versions 2 and 3. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities. TERMS AND CONDITIONS On January 22, 1991, IBM announced the IBM Customer Agreement (ICA). The 486/25 and 486/33 Processor Upgrade Options are available to customers under the ICA or any equivalent agreement, accepted by IBM, that is still in affect. FEATURE SECTION WARRANTY PERIOD: One year. NATIONAL EDUCATION LICENSE FEE: A National Education License Fee (NELF) is available under the terms and conditions of the Educational Allowance Attachment to the ICA. The NELF, which represents a 40% discount off the single unit price, is not subject to any further discount or allowance. FIELD INSTALLABLE FEATURE: Yes. Installable by IBM or an IBM Authorized Remarketer.
