The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 also provides eight 32-bit Micro Channel I/O slots (one slot is used for the IBM Personal System/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter with Cache and one slot for the IBM Personal System/2 XGA Display Adapter/A). These six additional slots are available for future expansion and growth, providing additional investment protection for the end user. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 system supports up to 32MB (1) of memory on the planar, eliminating the need for a memory adapter in the expansion slots. (1) Refer to the Programming Requirements and Limitations sections. USER PRODUCTIVITY User productivity is greatly enhanced by the many features of the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486: o The powerful 80486 processor operating at 33MHz or 25MHz speed (80486 contains 8KB of internal cache and memory cache controller along with floating point processor built-in) o Faster SCSI DASD devices o Faster memory: The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 memory subsystem has been designed for optimum performance with interleaved memory, and features parity memory checking for added reliability and data integrity. All system memory (up to 32MB) is supported on the system board, eliminating the need for a memory adapter in one of the expansion slots. The system board has a total of eight memory sockets, two of which are used by a pair of 2MB Single In-Line Memory Modules (SIMMs) to provide the standard 4MB of memory. Optional 1MB, 2MB, and 4MB memory SIMMs (70, 80 and 85 nanosecond only) are supported in matched pairs to provide various configurations up to 32MB. Although 80ns and 85ns memory SIMMs are supported, 70ns memory SIMMs provide optimum memory subsystem performance. o Graphics: The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 can be used where complex image and graphics applications require not only large storage capacities but sophisticated graphics support. The XGA is designed to be compatible at the BIOS level with existing VGA software applications while offering many new advanced video features for the Personal System/2 family of Micro Channel products. The design of these features has been optimized for use with window managers and other Graphical User Interfaces, allowing for highly interactive pop up icons and pull down menus. The XGA is a standard feature provided by the installation of the IBM Personal System/2 XGA Display Adapter/A in one of the 32-bit Micro Channel slots on the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486. The XGA supports all VGA modes in its standard configuration using 512K bytes of video memory. The higher resolutions available depend on the attached display and the presence of the PS/2 Video Memory Expansion Option. This option provides an extra 512K bytes of video memory, inserted on the PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A, allowing a maximum resolution of 1024 x 768 with a color content of 256 colors. The two Micro Channel expansion slots (slot 5 and slot 7) of the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 system contain video expansion connectors that can be used to install a video adapter. Slot 5 contains the standard PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A supplying the XGA/VGA functions to the system, and is designed to pass the signals to drive the Auxiliary Video Extension on slot 7 that can be used for an additional video adapter card, such as the IBM PS/2 Image Adapter/A. o Selectable boot feature and licensed System Programs: The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 provides another unique feature called selectable boot. The customer can change the default boot sequence (for example, boot first from 'A' drive, then 'C' drive, and load BASIC). COMPATIBILITY: The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 contains licensed System Programs that include BIOS, set configuration and features, test, copy an option diskette, backup/restore and update System Programs. These licensed System Programs are stored in a three million byte protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The Initial Machine load (IML) loads the BIOS program from fixed disk drive into system memory. BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces required to support the standard features of the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 and maintains compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT (TM), Personal Computer AT (R) and the PS/2 family. However, due to the higher speed of the 80486 processor in the Model 95 XP 486 systems, some timing sensitive software may require modification. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 Reference Diskette contains an update program (DISK386.SYS) and an installation program. The update program maintains compatibility between SCSI devices, IBM DOS and some of the following types of programs that assume the fixed disk drive will utilize the system DMA (Direct Memory Access) controller: o Multitasking DOS programs o Programs written for the 80386 microprocessor only o Programs that use the virtual 8086 mode of the 80386 microprocessor o Programs that emulate expanded memory specification (EMS) in extended memory. The update program should only be installed when applications providing DOS and/or memory extensions fail to work properly. For example, an application may fail to load and return the DOS prompt or when attempting to access a SCSI device, the system may hang or the screen may go blank. With this update program installed, a buffer is provided in the first megabyte of system memory, which serves as an intermediate location for data being transferred between the SCSI adapter and the requesting program buffer. While this update program allows applications that utilize the system DMA controller to run, some performance degradation in file access time may be experienced. Only after problems have been experienced, and the performance implications considered, should this update program be utilized. The Extended Graphics Array (XGA) is designed to be compatible with applications written to the following interfaces: o IBM VGA hardware interface in all operating environments. There are minor differences between the IBM VGA hardware interface and the XGA hardware support of the VGA interface. However, these differences are not expected to affect any applications. o Adapter Interface (AI) of 8514/A under DOS. o OS/2 Presentation Manager (TM) of 8514/A. o OS/2 DOS Compatibility Box in VGA modes. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. XGA does not support applications written to: o 8514/A hardware registers. o AI of 8514/A under OS/2. For additional information on XGA, refer to Product Announcement 190-182, dated October 30, 1990. LIMITATIONS: The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 supports a maximum of 32MB of memory, 16MB of which are addressable by Direct Memory Address (DMA). The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 supports 1MB, 2MB, and 4MB memory SIMMs (70, 80 and 85 nanosecond only). However, because of interleaved memory, memory SIMMs must be installed in a matched pair (for example, two 1MB SIMMs or two 2MB SIMMs). The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 systems with more than 8MB of memory should be installed using Reference Diskette Version 1.02 or higher. To obtain the latest version, call 1-800-426-7282 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., Eastern Standard time. Specify the diskette for the IBM Personal System/2 Model 95 XP 486 (57F1959).
