HIGH-PERFORMANCE COLOR The high performance of the IBM Xstation 140 is achieved by the incorporation of a RISC-architected, high-bandwidth processor with a fully integrated Block Level Transfer (BLT) engine. Performance testing has demonstrated over 90,000 Xstones on the industry standard Xbench benchmark test. The IBM Xstation 140 supports windowing on a wide selection of ISO-compliant IBM and other equipment manufacturer (OEM) all-points addressable displays. The Xstation 140 has 2MB of video memory standard, which fully supports 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768 greyscale monitors and ISO-compliant color monitors. The Xstation 140 supports a color palette of 16.7 million colors; up to 256 can be displayed at one time. The standard Hardware Pan feature allows the full utilization of all 2MB of video memory as a large virtual screen (2048 x 1024). The user can pan the physical screen through the video memory, allowing for a large virtual work area. X WINDOW SYSTEM VERSION 11 RELEASE 5 The Xstation 140 is supplied with an enhanced Xserver in the on-board nonvolatile flash memory. This Xserver is based on the X Window System Version 11 Release 5. Key elements of this X Window System Version 11 Release 5 support include the network font server, portable compiled font format (PCF) fonts, and X display manager control protocol (XDMCP) improvements. EASE OF SETUP AND INSTALLABILITY A local graphical user setup interface has been provided to complement the centralized graphical setup provided on the RISC System/6000 host using SMIT (System Management Interface Tool). Setup can now be managed either locally or from a central location for total flexibility. SNMP agent support is also provided. The IBM Xstation 140 provides the benefits and flexibility of centralized tools and local graphics setup in a windows environment for increased end-user productivity. CONFIGURATION VERSATILITY The IBM Xstation 140 offers standard 4MB system memory to support the enhanced X Window System Version 11 Release 5 server. The system memory is expandable to 68MB with the addition of up to two 32MB PS/2 SIMMs. The IBM Xstation 140 has 2MB of writeable, nonvolatile flash memory standard. Flash memory is loaded at the factory with the X server code and diagnostics. Initial powerup and booting of the Xstation is done from the Xserver stored in the on-board flash storage. Since the IBM Xstation 140 does not require a boot image from a host, it can be booted on many X Window System based LAN environments. The 2MB of on-board flash memory can be supplemented with up to 4MB of additional flash memory via a credit-card sized flash card. The additional flash memory can be used for future expansion of flash based features. The on-board flash memory is downloadable from a host for future updates of the X server and diagnostics. LAN CONNECTIONS The IBM Xstation 140 allows the customer to select either a Token-Ring or an Ethernet LAN connection. The Ethernet machine has physical plugs for 'Thick' (IEEE 802.3 standard 10BASE5) and 'Thin' (IEEE 802.3 standard 10BASE2) cable attachments. A converter is included standard with the Ethernet adapter for connection to 'Twisted Pair' (IEEE 802.3 standard 10BASET). The Ethernet connection supports both the IEEE 802.3 and Ethernet Version 2 protocols. The Token-Ring machine permits attachment of the Xstation 140 to a 4 million or 16 million bits/second Token-Ring network. SERIAL/PARALLEL PORTS The Xstation 140 supports two serial ports at up to 38.4 KBaud. This allows the connection of peripherals such as a plotter, modem, or printer. The IBM Xstation 140 also supports one parallel printer port. Printer or plotter support is provided by using the Xstation Manager Version 1.4 to redirect the RISC System/6000 printer or plotter files to the Xstation 140. CONNECTIVITY AND GROWTH OPTIONS The IBM Xstation 140 conforms to open systems standards -- a key factor in providing the customer the ability to develop and port applications across environments -- and provides support for numerous peripheral devices. The Xstation 140 offers interoperability with other IBM and other-vendor host systems, and can be used with multiple hosts on one LAN. A function called 'Generic Boot' makes it possible to more easily boot from IBM and other-vendor host systems. The Xstation 140 will support local clients with such functions as terminal emulation as well as window management. PRODUCT POSITIONING Xstations are hybrid devices -- a cross between high-powered workstations and low-cost terminals. Xstations are LAN-attached devices that provide access to the functions and performance of a workstation, but at a much lower cost per user. Xstations have traditionally been viewed only as complements to, or substitutes for, workstations, but the truth is they can be much, much more. With the appropriate emulation software in the Xstation or on a server, they can also be an outstanding replacement for mainframe terminals (ASCII, 3270, 5250). Xstations give the mainframe user a graphical interface to multiple terminal windows from multiple hosts on a single display. In addition, software is even available that allows an Xstation user anywhere in the network to access PC Windows applications and PC DOS applications. More and more customers are recognizing the Xstation's potential, and for many it has become the preferred desktop device, providing 'universal' access to information and applications. Customers migrating to a distributed environment particularly value the Xstation's ability to provide access to legacy mainframe applications as well as to new client-server applications. XSTATION ADVANTAGES Xstations employ an industry standard, graphics rendering protocol called the X Window System, which allows for the separation of computing functions performed at some host from user interaction and display functions performed at the Xstation. This architectural separation of functions has several important advantages: o Better resource sharing -- Workstations, PCs, hard drives, peripherals, application software, and so on, can all be shared by many users, instead of being duplicated on EVERY user's desktop where they sit IDLE much of the time. o Resource specialization -- Server configurations can be optimized for the required functions (database, communications, image, and so on). o Extended life of existing assets -- Xstations offload the graphics rendering workload from the workstation, thus freeing up more horsepower for application workloads. o More durable desktop investment -- Additional CPU, memory, or hard disk capacity can be added to the network as necessary, giving Xstation users the benefit of more or faster resources without having to upgrade the workstation or PC on everyone's desk. In addition, the X protocol effectively insulates or buffers the desktop device from much of the change and uncertainty on the 'back end.' So long as the back end host can function as an Xclient, it doesn't matter whether the host is brand 'A' or 'B,' or whether it uses operating system 'C' or 'D.' o Centralized administration and management -- Software configuration, upgrades, support, backup, and so on can be handled centrally and consistently by the systems administrator. And, since programs and data are not distributed throughout the enterprise on every desktop, there are fewer copies and files to maintain. One recent study has shown very significant advantages (35-50%) for Xterminals versus workstations or PCs in the ongoing costs associated with network support. o Flexibility -- An Xclient is an application running on a host anywhere in the network. An Xserver is the code running on the Xstation. The relationship between the number of Xclients and Xservers may be 1 to 1, 1 to many, or many to 1. Thus, X gives customers the flexibility needed to accommodate the configuration requirements of different applications. o Improved security -- Since they do not have diskette drives, Xstations offer an additional measure of protection against the intentional theft of data or the accidental introduction of viruses. o Better environmentals -- Xstations have a smaller footprint, are quieter, and generate less heat than either workstations or PCs. o Superior graphics performance -- Xstations deliver outstanding graphics performance, even better in many cases than workstations. Recognize too, that with the increased usage of graphical user interfaces (GUIs) in most new application development, graphics performance is becoming important to everyone, not just computer-aided design (CAD) users. Taken together, these advantages and the lower total cost of ownership make Xstations a compelling alternative to workstations in many environments. The Model 140 scores over 90,000 Xstones on the industry standard Xbench benchmark, and is 2 to 4 times faster than the Model 130 across a broad range of functions. Its performance places the Xstation 140 between the Xstation 130 and Xstation 150. The Xstation 140 offers truly outstanding price/performance. Its moderate price and impressive performance are an unbeatable combination in many customer environments. PUBLICATIONS The following publications are shipped with the product.
