The Xstation 150's quiet and compact packaging makes it attractive for many environments, reducing the environmental impact of adding workstations to a customer's enterprise. The high performance of the Xstation 150 is achieved by the incorporation of a 64-bit RISC architected, high bandwidth, fully cached Motorola 88110 processor. Performance testing has demonstrated over 115,000 Xstones on the industry standard Xbench benchmark test. The IBM Xstation 150 conforms to open systems standards, ensuring the customer a viable growth path and the ability to develop and port applications across environments. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS -- ENABLE CUSTOMER'S COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE The IBM Xstation 150 offers a high-performance, low-priced solution for customers committed to LAN-based X terminal computing. EASE OF USE AND INSTALLABILITY The Xstation 150 is supplied with an enhanced X server in non-volatile flash memory. This X server is based on the X Window System Version 11 Release 5. Key elements of this X Window System Version 11 Release 5 support include the network font server, portable compiled font format (PCF) fonts, X display manager control protocol (XDMCP) improvements, and the input extension. The Xstation 150 will support local clients with such functions as terminal emulation as well as window management. A local graphical user setup interface has been provided to complement the centralized graphical setup provided on the RISC System/6000 host using System Management Interface Tool (SMIT). Setup can now be managed either locally or from a central location for greater flexibility. SNMP agent support is also provided. END-USER PRODUCTIVITY -- IMPROVED WORKER PRODUCTIVITY The IBM Xstation 150 provides the benefits and flexibility of centralized tools and local graphics setup in a windows environment for increased end-user productivity. CONFIGURATION VERSATILITY The Xstation 150 offers standard 6MB system memory to support the enhanced X Window System Version 11 Release 5 server as well as local clients. The implementation of X server 'save under' and 'backing store' functions reduces LAN traffic and provides quick access to windows stored in local memory. The system memory is expandable to 22MB with the addition of up to two 8MB PS/2 memory SIMMs. The Xstation 150 supports windowing on a wide selection of ISO-compliant IBM and other equipment manufacturer (OEM) all-points addressable displays. The Xstation 150 has 2MB of video memory standard which fully supports 1280x1024 and 1024x768 greyscale displays and ISO-compliant color displays. The Xstation 150 supports a color palette of 16.7 million colors; up to 256 can be displayed at one time. The standard PAN feature allows the full utilization of all 2MB of video memory as a large virtual screen. The user can pan the physical screen through the video memory allowing for a larger work area. The Xstation 150 has 2MB of writeable, non-volatile flash memory standard. Flash memory is loaded at the factory with the X server code and diagnostics. Initial powerup and booting of the Xstation does not require a boot image from a host and can therefore be accomplished on many X Window System based LAN environments. The 2MB of on-board flash memory can be supplemented with up to 4MB of additional flash memory via a credit-card sized flash module. The additional flash memory can be used for additional local clients and read only memory (ROM)-based fonts. The flash is downloadable from a host for future updates of the X server and diagnostics. The Xstation 150 allows the customer to specify either a Token-Ring or an Ethernet LAN connection. The Ethernet adapter has physical plugs for 'Thick' (IEEE 802.3 standard 10BASE5) and 'Thin' (IEEE 802.3 standard 10BASE2) cable attachments. A converter is included standard with the Ethernet adapter for connection to 'Twisted Pair' (IEEE 802.3 standard 10BASET). The Ethernet connection supports both the IEEE 802.3 and Ethernet Version 2 protocols. The Xstation 150 supports four serial ports at up to 38.4 Kbps. This allows the connection of a number of peripherals, such as a plotter, printer, or bar code reader as well as the RISC System/6000 compatible tablet and Lighted PF Keys (LPFKs). The Xstation 150 also allows connection via the Serial Line Interface Protocol (SLIP), over one of the serial ports, although host connection via the Ethernet adapter or the Token-Ring adapter is the recommended configuration. The Xstation 150 also supports one parallel printer port. Printer or plotter support is provided by using the Xstation Manager Version 1.4 to redirect the RISC System/6000 printer or plotter files to the Xstation 150. SYSTEM MANAGEMENT -- IS OPERATIONS PRODUCTIVITY The IBM Xstation 150 offers customers flexibility in configuring their LAN-based systems: utilizing either a Token-Ring or an Ethernet network, customers can maximize programmer and IS productivity by centralizing system management functions. CONNECTIVITY AND GROWTH OPTIONS The IBM Xstation 150 conforms to open systems standards -- a key factor in providing the customer the ability to develop and port applications across environments -- and provides support for numerous peripheral devices. The IBM Xstation 150 offers interoperability with other IBM and vendor host systems, and can be used with multiple hosts on one LAN. A new function called 'Generic Boot' makes it possible to more easily boot from IBM and vendor host systems. PRODUCT POSITIONING The IBM Xstation 150 is a high-performance, advanced-function LAN-attached X terminal. The Xstation 150 provides significantly higher performance than the Xstation 120 and 130 through the use of a RISC architected, fully cached processor. The Xstation 150 is 3 to 6 times faster than the Xstation 130 for a broad range of functions. This performance boost puts the Xstation ahead of many workstations in graphical display performance. The Xstation 150 is an attractive solution for users operating in a LAN-based heterogeneous environment. Customers can inexpensively and easily add high-function Xstations into their LAN-based environment. The server, which is stored in flash memory, is particularly suitable to easy setup in an open systems environment. PUBLICATIONS The following publications are shipped with the product.
