7-30 Waters Experience

7-30 Waters SAAMI Dimensions

Other than deer hunting with 120 grain Noslers, I hadn't done too much with the 7-30 Waters. Then one day, a 285448 came home with me.

285448

285448 Designed by H. Guy Louverin, very accurate in the 7 mm. (GC, RN, 118 – TP 346)

The 285448 fits neatly into the 7-30 Waters T/C Contender chamber. The gas check is well supported by the neck. Notice that the ogive continues all the way into the first groove? It is less than bore diameter, so the nose extends into the rifling.

There is a Kephart scraper above the first band. The Kephart scraper was intended to scrape fouling with every shot [residuum?]. I believe that some bullets used a groove sized forward band with a groove to the front to accomplish the same scraping function.

Seating Depths of 287346 [T], 285448 [M], and 285129 [B]

285448 Shape Compared to 285129

Top - 285448 ogive continues all the way into the first groove There is a Kephart scraper above the first band.

Bottom - 285129 has a an ogive that runs into the front band. This makes the groove diameter portion farther forward. [so it tends to seat deeper].

285448 Stability

Plenty of Lube

Accurate  [8.0 Gr Unique at 50 yards]

Forgot the sized diameter (.285, I think)... The flier is most likely due to bad casting or poor shooting on my part, or both. It seems to be fairly position-insensitive, case fill was down around 30% IIRC.

Minimal Recoil

Old Timer Smacks Steel

Well, after 22LR Silhouette and Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette, he musta had some sort of an idea...
