IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 MODEL 65 SX IBM Announcement Letter Number 190-052 dated March 20, 1990 IBM US - Last Revised on March 20, 1990 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Model 65 SX 8565-061 and the 8565-121, two new Micro Channel (TM) Architecture models based on the popular Intel (1) 80386 SX processor, utilize the 80386SX processor running at 16MHz. Standard features include a 1.44MB, 3.5-inch, half-high diskette drive, VGA graphics and 2MB of memory on the system board. The fixed disk drive controller is the recently introduced Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), the PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter. This bus master adapter provides additional expansion capability and an interface for the new 3.5-inch, half-high SCSI fixed disk drives of either 60MB (8565-061) or 120MB (8565-121). Both models can be expanded to 8MB of memory on the system board and support up to 16MB of system memory. Design enhancements to these systems offer significant advantages in configuration flexibility and expansion. In addition to providing seven available adapter slots, the standard configuration supports up to five internal Direct Access Storage Devices (DASD), and removable media such as diskette drives, fixed disk drives, tape backup and CD-ROM. An optional feature allows support of up to six internal DASD. Models 8565-061 and 8565-121 are supported by Operating System/2 (TM) (OS/2 (R)) Standard Edition 1.1 and 1.2, OS/2 Extended Edition 1.1 and 1.2, and IBM Disk Operating System (DOS) Version 3.30 and 4.00. STATEMENTS OF DIRECTION IBM intends to support the Personal System/2 Model 65 SX (8565-061 and -121) by the AIX (R) PS/2. IBM intends to support the IBM Personal System/2 Model 65 SX (8565-061 and -121) with the IBM 4680 Operating System Version 2 (5601-192). Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Intel 80386SX 16MHz Processor o PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter -- as standard DASD controller o 60MB or 120MB SCSI 23ms fixed disk drive models o 2MB memory standard on system board -- expandable to 8MB o Micro Channel Architecture with eight 16-bit I/O slots NOTE: SCSI adapter requires one I/O slot. o Five internal DASD bays -- optionally expandable to six bays o Support for 5.25-inch internal DASD device DESCRIPTION The PS/2 family is expanded with two Micro Channel Architecture floorstanding models, the 8565-061 and 8565-121. Features on these new systems include the Intel 80386SX 16Mhz microprocessor, 2MB of system board memory, and a SCSI bus master fixed disk drive controller, the IBM Personal System/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter. Additionally, the standard fixed disk drive on the Model 8565-061 is 60MB and 120MB on the 8565-121. Both models can be optionally expanded to 8MB of memory on the system board, with a total of 16MB of memory supported by the system. The PS/2 Model 65 SX provides 32-bit microprocessor compatibility at a price previously held by 16-bit 80286 systems. The 80386SX 32-bit microprocessor runs at a clock speed of 16MHz and utilizes a 16-bit data path. Two memory SIMM sockets are provided on the system board, one contains 2MB of 100ns memory. Several system board memory alternatives are possible by adding various combinations of 1MB, 2MB or 4MB memory options to the system board for a total of 8MB. The PS/2 65 SX is enhanced in design to provide five DASD and removable media bays. The three bays located in the front of the system are customer accessible in that they can contain DASD devices that require insertion and removal of media. The remaining two bays are specifically designed for non-accessible DASD devices, such as fixed disks. The customer accessible bays consist of two 3.5-inch, half-high bays and one 5.25-inch, full-high bay. The top 3.5-inch, half-high bay contains a standard 1.44MB diskette drive, the second 3.5-inch, half-high bay and the 5.25-inch, full-high bay are open for expansion purposes. The standard fixed disk drive configuration of the PS/2 Model 65 SX contains one SCSI fixed disk drive located in one of the two non-accessible bays. The other non-accessible bay contains the necessary hardware to install a second IBM SCSI fixed disk drive option. The 5.25-inch, full-high bay can be converted into two 3.5-inch, half-high bays through the use of the optional Fixed Disk Drive Kit A (1053) (6451053). This conversion allows the installation of a third and fourth IBM SCSI fixed disk drive option.
