Ideal Tool #3

Ideal Tool #3

The #3 Tool (for use with rimmed cartridges).

The #3 tool was very versatile, but like other Ideal tools a different one had to be ordered for each specific cartridge.  As well, three sizes were required to load the full range of centre fire ammunition (.22 Extra Long Maynard to the .50 calibre Sharps.

This model included a primer extractor.  It was available with either a single or double adjustable chamber, which permitted variable seating of empty cases.  This allowed for the difference in case lengths when seating bullets.  It had no attached bullet mould.

This model was discontinued shortly after World War II.

This #3 tool was made for Stevens 25-25&21 calibre.

These three Ideal #3 tools illustrate the variation in size that one sees with this model. The tool on the left is in 40-110 Winchester Express; the middle tool is 38-50 Remington, and the right tool is 25-21 Stevens. Note the insert showing that the thickness of the tools also varies with overall size and with the size of the cartridge. The 40-110 Winchester Express tool is seen on the right in the lower panel of the image.

This #3 tool was made for Colt's .45 calibre.
