IBM 3117 Extension Unit [6456809]


The IBM 3117 Extension Unit [6456809] uses an Intel 80186 to provide additional image processing power in the  scanner. The extension unit provides four additional capabilities to the IBM 3117 Scanner, including:
o Attaches to IBM PC via general purpose communication adapters
o Attaches to the IBM 3193 Display Station
o Image compression in the scanner
o Contrast control

Asynchronous Communications Adapter, Serial/Parallel Adapter, or the High Speed Adapter. The scanner can also attach directly to a 3193 Display Station via the 3117 Extension Unit.

The IBM 3117 Extension Unit allows for compression of image data in the IBM 3117 Scanner. Under program control, the IBM 3117 Extension Unit will also send raw image data, in addition to, compressed image data.

Contrast control is achieved using dynamic thresholding and edge enhancement  functions of the IBM 3117 Extension Unit. These functions are useful for capturing  images with various quality levels, especially for scanning an image where there is low contrast between the image and its background. The functions also make the edges of characters or lines look sharper and crisper. The edge enhancement is especially useful when the image consists of pictures and characters using digital halftone. Contrast level is selectable under program control.

The 3118 Scanner connects to the 3193 Display Station through a 38.4 Kbps RS-422 interface, or a High Speed Adapter with 1 Mbps RS-422
interface, or a serial port [old systems limited to 9600 bps RS-232C].
