3172 Errors

Error Information Displayed
The next four sections describe what you see on the 4-digit display for each of the four types of error information.
Note: When there is an error, be sure to record all error information as it is displayed.

Error Code: When a 1 is displayed in digit 1, the 3172 is displaying an error code. If you are in Maintenance Mode, see "Rules for Keypad Use during Error Conditions" in topic 1.3.2.3. The following table shows how to recognize an error code:

Digit 1   Digit 2         Digit 3           Digit 4
1      First digit of  Second digit of   Third digit of
error code      error code        error code

The information associated with an error can be viewed in either Operator Mode or Maintenance Mode.

To view the operator action for the displayed error, press Enter.

Operator Action: If you press Enter after viewing the error code information, the 3172 displays operator action information. This information indicates the severity of the error and the action you should take. The following table shows how an operator action is displayed.

Digit 1        Digit 2         Digit 3              Digit 4
   2              Severity       Slot number      0

The operator action can be viewed in either Operator Mode or Maintenance Mode.

Digit 1 is always 2.

Digit 2 represents the severity of the problem and provides a quick reference to the action you need to take when the 3172 experiences a problem. The following table lists the severity codes that can appear on the 4-digit display and the appropriate operator actions:
Severity
Operator Action

Note: Codes with a severity of 0 or 1 do not appear on the display. These codes, however, are recorded in the system log. See "The System Log Facility" in topic 1.4.

If digit 3 is between 1 and 8, it indicates the slot where the error was detected. To identify the type of adapter in the indicated slot, see the 3172 Profile Worksheet. This worksheet is used with the 3172 Operator Facility/2 (Operator Facility) to create the 3172 profiles and Working Diskettes. If digit 3 is 0, the error involves a component that does not have a slot number.

Digit 4 is always 0.

To view the component information for this error, press Enter.

Component Information: If you pressed Enter after viewing operator action information, the 3172 displays component information. The following table shows how component information is displayed:

Digit 1   Digit 2   Digit 3          Digit 4
3         0      Component ID:    Component ID:
                    First digit      Second digit

This information can be viewed in either Operator Mode or Maintenance Mode.

Digit 1 is always 3 and digit 2 is always 0.

Digits 3 and 4 identify the type of component that is causing the error. Use this component ID information, along with the slot number (displayed as part of the operator action information), to determine the specific component that is causing the error. Use the following list to determine the component ID:
10, 17 or 1C

35
TP Adapter Type J1 (J1 Adapter)

Hereafter, the T1, E1/X.21, and J1 Adapters are referred to as TP Adapters.

Note: If you receive a value other than the ones listed above, it relates to an internal function, not to an adapter.
If you are viewing the error in Operator Mode and do not want to return to an operator action or error code, you can clear the error by keying in C and pressing Clear.
If there is another error pending when you press Clear, it displays at this time. If no other errors are pending, the error light turns off and the display shows operational status.
If you are operating the 3172 in Maintenance Mode, you can view additional detailed data. To view the additional detailed data associated with this error, press Enter.

Additional Detailed Data: If you pressed Enter after viewing component information, the 3172 displays additional detailed data. This additional detailed data can be viewed only if you are in Maintenance Mode.
