June 9, 1992 Dear 1-2-3 Release 3.1/3.1+ Customer, This package contains the disk you need to modify your 123 Release 3.1/3.1+ program. Your 123DOS.EXE file in your 123 program directory will be updated. The 1-2-3 Release 3.1 modification disk addresses a compatibility issue with certain new computers based on IBM PS/2 architecture with 486 or 386SLC CPU chips or with AOX CPU accelerators. Without applying this modification, you may experience performance degradation or keyboard irregularities when using 123 3.1/3.1+ on these new machines. To modify your 1-2-3 Release 3.1/3.1+ program: 1. Insert the Modification disk in drive A: (or B) 2. At the operating system prompt, type A: (or B:) and press ENTER to make A: (or B:) the current drive. 3. Type MODIFY31 followed by a space and the path of your Release 3.1 directory, and then press ENTER. For example, if your 1-2-3 Release 3.1 directory is C:\123R31, you should type MODIFY31 C:\123R31 and then press ENTER. When the update is complete, the following message appears: "Correction installed" 1-2-3 Release 3.1/3.1+ is now ready for use. The only difference that will appear after the modification has taken place is that the 123DOS.EXE file's date and time will have changed to the date and time that you applied the modification. NOTES: ***** ERROR MESSAGES ***** If you receive the message "Not DOS16/M executable" You are attempting to update 1-2-3 Release 3.0. This modification was designed for 1-2-3 Release 3.1 or 3.1+. It will not work on, and is not needed for, 123 Release 3.0. --------- If you receive the message "Error: patch already applied or location not found" The update has already been applied. You may verify this by listing the 123DOS.EXE file. The date and time will have changed to reflect the date and time the update was applied. If the update has not been applied, 123DS.EXE will most often have one of the following dates: 8-30-90 (123 3.1 Standard Edition) 11-05-90 (123 3.1 Server Edition)1-31-91 (123 3.1 Update) 6-20-91 (123 3.1+ Standard & Server Editions) Note: Non-English versions of 123 and special OEM packages may have different dates, which can be seen on your original 123 program disks. In all cases, the date will change when the update is run. --------- If you receive the message "Error: cannot open file for patching" The 123DOS.EXE file has been attributed Read Only. The file should be Read-Write for the modification to work. (Also, see Network information below.) ***** NETWORK INSTALLATION ***** If you are applying the modification to a Network File Server The network administrator, or someone else with sufficient rights, should apply this modification. 1) You must have ALL access rights to the directory which contains 123DOS.EXE. 2) The file 123DOS.EXE must be READ-WRITE rather than Read-Only. Some networks require software to be read-only to run. If the 123DOS.EXE file is Read-Only, use the command ATTRIB -R 123DOS.EXE to remove the read-only attribute. Modify 123 using this disk. Then use ATTRIB +R 123DOS.EXE to add back the read-only attribute. If you prefer, you may also use your network operating systems utility to modify the Read-Only/Read-Write file attribute. 3) No one should be using 123 at the time the modification is made. ***** VIRUS SCANNING SOFTWARE ***** If you are using Virus Scanning Software This modification will alter the 123DOS.EXE file, which may cause a virus checking program to report a virus. If you are using a virus scanning program that is memory resident, you may receive a report that the 123DOS.EXE file is being modified. You may wish to disable the resident virus scanner before proceeding with the modification, and re-enable it afterwards. If you are using a non-memory resident virus scanning program that maintains a record of files on your disk, you may receive a report that the 123DOS.EXE file has been modified since it was last scanned. You may wish to have the virus scanner re-scan your 1-2-3 Release 3.1 directory immediately following this modification in order to allow your virus scanning program to update its record of the 123DOS.EXE file. ***** INTERNATIONAL PC's ***** This modification should not be applied to copies of 123 Release 3.1/3.1+ running on PC's which use double byte character sets. These PC's are common in Japan and Korea.
