An "extra role" are the so called "Planar ADFs", which set the options for the MCA Systemboards in PS/2 machines.
The Planar-ADFs are those *.ADF associated with the leading letters D, P and S.

The order is that:
D{planar-id}.ADF = Device Options Descriptor
P{planar-id}.ADF = Planar Options Descriptor
S{planar-id}.ADF = Systemboard ADP for options
Here's a list of the planar ADFs, the associated machines and the relevant options.
