On 9-17-1998, I downloaded the 40-bit encryption, Netscape 4.06. Starting at http://w3.ibm.com/netscape/page1.htm, I worked my way through their pages 'till I eventually to the ftp site from ftp://w3.ibm.com/downloads/navigator/navigator-v406-export_ppc_rs6000-ibm-aix4.tar. It put the 13MB file in my DFS home directory as navigator-v406-export_ppc_rs6000-ibm-aix4.tar. It untar'd it into a navigator-v406.ppc_rs6000-ibm-aix4 directory, which I moved to /afs/almaden.ibm.com/ais/netscape/4.06/netscape. I updated /local/bin/xnetscape and made 4.06 the new version. ========================================================================= 3/3/1999: Downloaded "Standalone Navigator 4.08 for AIX" from http://w3.ibm.com/netscape/us0001.htm, put it into our /local/bin/xnetscape script as -new. See my notes in /afs/alm/ais/netscape/README-Almaden, especially the part on how to fix the error messages you get when starting up netscape, Could not load program /afs/almaden.ibm.com/ais/netscape/4.08/netscape_aix4 Symbol __malloc_postfork_unlock in /usr/lib/libpthreads.a is undefined Symbol __malloc_prefork_lock in /usr/lib/libpthreads.a is undefined Could not load library libC.a[shr.o] Error was: Exec format error See the NETSCAPE FORUM on IBMUNIX for the latest ftp site, but I got nav_lib43.tar.Z from ftp://ftp.ibm.de/aix/efixes/netscape, and zcat nav_lib43.tar.Z | tar xvf - mv libC.a /afs/alm/ais/netscape/4.08/lib43/libC.a ========================================================================= 6/7/1999: Downloaded "Communicator Standard 4.6 for AIX" from http://w3.ibm.com/netscape/us0001.htm, put it into our /local/bin/xnetscape script as -new. See my notes in /afs/alm/ais/netscape/README-Almaden. ========================================================================= 6/5/2000: Downloaded "Communicator Standard 4.73 for AIX 4.2" from ftp://w3.ibm.com/downloads/navigator/ communicator-v473-us.ppc_rs6000-ibm-aix4.tar Put it on the CWS at /spdata/sys1/install/aix433/lppsource/PROD, where I could untar it, which created a communicator-v473.ppc_rs6000-ibm-aix4 directory, which I renamed to Netscape_4.73. ========================================================================= 8/13/2002: Notes from when I installed Netscape 7 in the /afs/d/software/base/Netscape.7 directory. This Netscape Version 7 was downloaded from IBM's alphaWorks web site on August 13, 2002 by Rick Jasper. See the http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/aixnetscape page, posted July 23, 2002. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- What was downloaded was the 25 MB Netscape.base.tar.gz, -rwxrwxrwx 1 jasper staff 24674461 Aug 13 16:48 Netscape.base.tar.gz which was then gzip'd gzip -d < Netscape.base.tar.gz | tar xvf - which produced the single file, Netscape.base. -rw-r--r-- 1 jasper staff 34777088 Jul 15 15:55 Netscape.base An inutoc command revealed this file to contain Netscape.base.dom_inspector 6.9.9.99 # Netscape DOM Inspector Netscape.base.jsdebugger 6.9.9.99 # Netscape Javascript Debugger Netscape.base.mailnews 6.9.9.99 # Netscape Mail/News Netscape.base.psm 6.9.9.99 # Netscape Security (SSL) Netscape.base.rte 6.9.9.99 # Netscape Navigator/Composer Netscape.base.spellcheck 6.9.9.99 # IBM Spelling Checker for Netscape Note this prereq, though. rpm.rte 3.0.5.20 rpm stands for the Redhat Package Manager, which is the Linux installp-like tool, and which I just happened to have installed on my jasper machine on June 6, 2002, just 10 weeks ago, due to my playing around with Open SSL (see my aixnotes/ssh.install.notes file). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- All of this installed ok, with a netscape7 link getting created in /usr/bin. But calling this netscape7 binary, got me exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program /usr/netscape/base/netscape-bin because of the following errors: 0509-150 Dependent module libgtk.so could not be loaded. 0509-022 Cannot load module libgtk.so. 0509-026 System error: A file or directory in the path name does not exist. A quick google search led me to this forum entry Did you install IBM's gtk+, glib & gettext? ... Mozilla depends on gtk+, which depends on glib which depends on gettext and note ALL of these depend on download the rpm installer. These get installed in /opt/freeware, so if you don't have them there mozilla won't run. Following that http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/aix/products/aixos/linux/download.html link got me to a very interesting page with about 450 different software packages, including gtk+, glib & gettext. I got -rwxrwxrwx 1 jasper staff 1255519 Aug 13 17:23 gtkplus-1.2.10-3.aix4.3.ppc.rpm -rwxrwxrwx 1 jasper staff 186677 Aug 13 17:23 glib-1.2.10-2.aix4.3.ppc.rpm -rwxrwxrwx 1 jasper staff 524324 Aug 13 17:24 gettext-0.10.39-2.aix4.3.ppc.rpm which I copied to this directory. To install these things, su rpm -Uhv gettext-0.10.39-2.aix4.3.ppc.rpm rpm -Uhv glib-1.2.10-2.aix4.3.ppc.rpm rpm -Uhv gtkplus-1.2.10-3.aix4.3.ppc.rpm and I now have a /usr/opt/freeware/lib/libgtk.so and netscape7 starts up. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first time you run Netscape 7.0, it gives asks you for your Screen Name, evidently accepting American Online, Compuserve 2000, AOL Instant Messenger, Netscape Instant Messenger, or Netscape. I gave it my AOL screen name, RickAJasper. After a few more questions, the browser finally came up.
