On February 7, 2006, I obtained the jasperfamily.org domain and relinquished the four other [rick|kathy|melanie|adam].jasper.name domains I had. The cost for 10 years was $66.25. A bargain considering the .name domains were gonna cost $9.95 per year with no multi-year discount. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm using zoneedit for my free DNS server at http://www.zoneedit.com/auth My username/password is RJasper/r-3. For the rick, kathy, adam, & melanie IP names (and any others I choose to add for individual web pages), all I need is the "wildcard A record", *, which equates anything.jasperfamily.org returns the same IP address (eg 71.198.153.129). I also have the following IP addresses defined for the lab in the garage.
linux1 = 192.168.1.221
linux2 = 192.168.1.222 (also known as ldap)
linux3 = 192.168.1.223
linux4 = 192.168.1.224
sol1   = 192.168.1.231
sol2   = 192.168.1.232
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- zoneedit tells me to "Please tell the registrar where you purchased 'jasperfamily.org' to change the nameservers to ns3.zoneedit.com and ns17.zoneedit.com" To do that, I went to http://www.godaddy.com - authenticated with my account (rickjasper/r-3) - Go to Domains -> My Domain Names - Click JASPERFAMILY.ORG Over on the right is "Nameservers Summary", which was set to godaddy's default of PARK3.SECURESERVER.NET and PARK4.SECURESERVER.NET - Click on "Click here to see details or to modify" - Change the DNS servers. When I did, godaddy warned me that "Changes to a domain's nameservers can take up to 48 hours to propagate, this means your hosting or other domain features will not work during this propagation time." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- My home computer is 67.169.88.229 (as of 2-7-2006), but after a power outage on 6-27-2006, it changed to 67.180.81.150, so I need a Dynamic DNS solution. According to Zone Edit's Dynamic web page, I need their zeDyn client (which I downloaded, installed, ran, and configured) to automatically update the Zone Edit DNS server. Once launched, it stays running. You can see its icon in the icon tray on the right-hand side of the screen, presuming you didn't use srvany to launch it (see below). It's a little green glob with slippers. You can double-click it to bring up a little window that you use to specify your ZoneEdit login information (RJasper/r-3) and which hosts you want to update. I use a global A-record, so my host is *.jasperfamily.org. With BillSniff, you can see it go off to http://69.181.112.206/checkip.html and get a two-line response. When it updates That web page also said I could use srvany to run this as a service (presumably to always keep this up-to-date). I downloaded srvany.zip from www.tacktech.com and unzipped instsrv.exe srvany.exe and srvany.writ to my c:\junk folder. But according to this web page, it should have gone into c:\reskit, but I doubt this is really true. It appears to define zeDyn as a service, from a DOS window, I need to cd \junk instsrv.exe "Zone Edit Dynamic DNS" c:\junk\srvany.exe When I did that, it said The service was successfuly added! Make sure that you go into the Control Panel and use the Services applet to change the Account Name and Password that this newly installed service will use for its Security Context. That path is really Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services Scroll down to the newly-defined "Zone Edit Dynamic DNS" service and right-click to look at Properties. Under the "Log On" tab, it's already set up to "Log on as:" the "Local System account". Continuing with the instructions on the above web page, it said to use regedit, navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Zone Edit Dynamic DNS key, create a new "Parameters" key, then a new "Applications" key under that, and set it to C:\"Program Files"\zeDyn\zeDyn.exe I was then able to start that service and now I see both srvany.exe and zeDyn.exe in the list of running programs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before deleting these, The adam.jasper.name domain had adam.jasper.name = 67.180.9.228 www.adam.jasper.name = 67.180.9.228 MailForwards: *@adam.jasper.name --> rick@delphion.com Nameservers: ns14.zoneedit.com 209.126.137.108 ns15.zoneedit.com 69.10.134.195
