Notes on when I installed System Expert on some Patent Server Machines A Sales contact is Dennis Varganyi in Toronto. Tie line 8-883-3976. 1) Register at http://systemexpert.services.ibm.com Got e-mail back with a customer number (US05336519). 2) Register my account at http://systemexpert.services.ibm.com. Used Password = perfpros Security Question = "Which madman initially set up the Almaden Patent Server site?" Answer = "Ed Geraghty" 3) Defined SP system with as0000e0 as the Control Workstation. Defined 2 of the SP/2 nodes, 206 & 301. Defined our 3 DCE/DFS servers, 71-73. Answer node name with output of uname -n command, and uname -m for the CPU ID. 4) After registering, requested authorization keys. Got back e-mail with these lines Authorization Keys for Monthly Service: Key Hostname Type Description ----- -------- ------- ----------- mmzsi ar0071e0 RS/6000 DCE/DFS Server uufko ar0072e0 RS/6000 DCE/DFS Server omtwi ar0073e0 RS/6000 DCE/DFS Server wazcc as0206e0 SP Node Net Commerce wmfao as0301e0 SP Node DB/2 5) From their web site again at http://systemexpert.services.ibm.com, downloaded their software, which came in as SysExp_Comp.tar (4.6 MB). scp SysExp_Comp.tar root@cws:/spdata/sys1/install/aix432/lppsource/PROD/SystemExpert/SysExp_Comp.tar On the CWS, cd /spdata/sys1/install/aix432/lppsource/PROD/SystemExpert tar xvf SysExp_Comp.tar inutoc . On ar0071e0, mount cws:/spdata/sys1/install/aix432/lppsource/PROD/SystemExpert /mnt smitty installp This installed SystemExpert.USMfree 5.8.3.0 C System Expert - Monitor Kit free which put a bunch of stuff into the /usr/lpp/SystemExpert directory. cd /usr/lpp/SystemExpert/software ./install which asked me for the "installation authority key" (mmzsi). Now what this thing did bears scrutiny. As far as I can tell, it - Created a 16MB file system, mouted at /xrsa. - Created a xrsa userid & xrsa group. - Mentioned that "If you are interested in a tutorial," that I could "point your web browser at file:/xrsa/html/demo/index.htm for a quick introduction to System Expert." - Added the following 5 aliases in /etc/aliases. - inspec-admin: root - inspec-support: root, expert@austin.ibm.com - inspec-report-receiver: "|(PATH=${PATH-/usr/bin}:/xrsa/mon:/xrsa/bin; export PATH; /xrsa/mon/mailrec inspec-report-users)" - inspec-report-users: xrsa, root - xrsa-admin: inspec-admin Curious that the installation notes said it was suppose to also create - inspec-receiver - prompt-receiver - Added these 3 lines to root's crontab, which means this is now live (!!!) - 1 0 * * * /xrsa/mon/XRSAdaily >> /dev/null 2>&1 - 0 * * * * /xrsa/mon/XRSAhourly >> /dev/null 2>&1 - 20,50 * * * * /xrsa/mon/XRSArestart -b >> /dev/null 2>&1 - Added these 3 lines to /etc/rc.local (who said they could add junk there?) # Commenting out the next two lines disables the InSPEC uptime daemon echo "Starting XRSAreboot..." [ -f /xrsa/mon/maintprof -a -f /xrsa/mon/XRSAreboot ] && /xrsa/mon/XRSAreboot start - Created a SInstall.log in the current directory, i.e. at /usr/lpp/SystemExpert/software/SInstall.log -
