Abstract

The IBM 9406 AS/400e is an e-server 170 that delivers outstanding price and performance.

Model Abstract 9406-170

(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of May 31, 2001)

The IBM 9406 e-server 170 has many growth options. The e-server 170 is ideal if you want dedicated servers to run Domino, conduct e-commerce, or to develop new Java applications or other high-demand client/server applications. Also, interactive performance is increased significantly over many previous models, making it an excellent replacement solution for running existing line-of-business applications.

The Model 170 offers a mix of server performance for the client/server applications, as well as interactive performance required by the thousands of applications that have been developed for the AS/400.

The AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino exploits AS/400 system resources to deliver performance for Lotus Domino(TM) workloads. AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino is particularly effective when combined with the partitioning capabilities of Domino Enterprise Server(TM) to allow multiple Lotus Domino workloads (e.g., mail and applications) on a single physical server.

It adds up to AS/400 e-server 170 -- an ideal choice for small businesses or distributed commercial environments that want to transform isolated PC users into well-connected work groups with access to common applications and shared databases.

Description

Base System

The base configuration of the e-server 170 offers performance and capabilities suited for many growing businesses. Among the components in the base system are:

·         System processor

Operations Console

The AS/400 supports a new directly-attached, full-function 5250 PC console that includes a graphical control panel application. The user interface of the control panel application resembles its hardware counterpart. The console and control panel applications can be used together or separately, but each requires its own direct cable attachment to an AS/400 system. Each cable must be purchased separately from IBM for the AS/400 model being used. Both cables are only available in a single length of six meters.

The direct-attach console can also serve as a gateway for a dial-in remote console. The remote console can also be configured to run the 5250 emulator application and/or the graphical control panel application. Both applications enable you to perform the majority of system operations tasks, for example back-up and recovery, with the AS/400 systems and the operations staff in physically separate locations. The connection between the remote and direct-attach console uses Windows dial-up networking point-to-point protocol (PPP) with the direct-attach console employing Windows NT Remote Access Service (RAS) for access.

The applications are included on the Operations Navigator CD-ROM shipped with OS/400. They are installed and used from PCs with Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (required for the direct-attach console when it serves as a remote console gateway) when remote PC access is desired or Windows 9X operating systems. The operations console application requires the appropriate operations console cable, based on the AS/400 model on which it will be used. The remote control panel application requires a remote control panel cable, also based on the AS/400 model. OS/400 V4R3, or later, is always required for direct/remote 5250 console attachment, however the control panel application will function as a stand-alone application with any AS/400 Advanced Series or e-Series system.

EZ-Setup

EZ-Setup, first offered in V4R3, simplifies AS/400 setup with a browser-like GUI and an easy-to-follow sequence of dialogs on your PC attached to an AS/400 using the Operations Console cable. The dialogs step you through the setup process and minimize decisions where possible. After you have completed your initial setup, you can continue with the Next Step or launch Operations Navigator. The Next Step resides on the same CD-ROM as EZ-Setup. EZ-Setup is delivered on a CD shipped with the AS/400 system hardware. The code runs on a PC under Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000 and requires the Operations Console cable connected to the host AS/400.

There are two components to EZ-Setup.

1.       EZ-Setup Wizard

2.       The Next Step

EZ-Setup Wizard reduces the number of decisions needed during setup and reduces the amount of installation information required by the user. The interface is all graphical -- no green screens. EZ-Setup Wizard helps the user perform these tasks:

·         Installs Client Access express and the components of Operations Navigator needed by EZ-Setup

The Next Step is a set of HTML pages the user reads before performing the task. Topics include:

AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino

Multiple processor features are available on the AS/400e server Dedicated Server for Domino. Because the AS/400e server 170 is used as the base model, the AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino can be fully configured with all the same expandability currently available on the AS/400e server 170.

The AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino base unit contains a PCI RAID disk unit controller that allows the attachment of up to 10 disk units before additional disk controller features are required.

The AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino exploits AS/400 system resources to deliver performance for Lotus Domino workloads. The AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino is particularly effective when combined with the partitioning capabilities of the Domino Enterprise Server(TM), allowing multiple Domino workloads (e.g., mail and applications) to be supported on a single physical server. The Dedicated Server for Domino is built specifically for Domino workloads.

You can take advantage of upgrade options or growth paths for the new processor features of the AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino. Vertical upgrade paths are immediately available. Start with either of the first two new Dedicated Domino Processors and move to a larger processor as you need more performance and power.

AS/400 CPM/Uninterruptible Power System (UPS)

For the AS/400 e-server 170, IBM is offering an intelligent, line interactive, single phase UPS. This product was specifically designed by AS/400 Power Engineers to offer a new level of integrated power supply management. It will protect e-server 170 from any common power anomaly. Lightning strikes, causing spikes as high as 6000V, are arrested; power surges and brownouts are discretely corrected; and power failures up to fifteen minutes are protected by battery backup. In addition, an exclusive AS/400 feature, Continuously Powered Main-store (CPM), can maintain memory data for extended power outages.

Product Positioning

The AS/400e server 170:

AS/400e server 170 -- Entry Positioning

Multiple performance levels enable growth and help to protect your investment.

AS/400e server 170 can upgrade with larger processor features.

The Model 170 supports up to 30 communication lines or 228 twinaxial workstation attachments. It has a maximum of 10 arms of DASD attachability with a maximum of 4096 MB of main storage.

There are no upgrades into or out of the AS/400e server 170.

AS/400e server 170 -- Customer Positioning

If you have an earlier non-RISC AS/400 model with less performance than the AS/400e 170, you should evaluate this offering. If you are running "legacy green-screen" applications and envision moving to a server-oriented software package, the AS/400e server 170 provides a solution with outstanding capabilities for both environments. Especially attractive are the large number of twinaxial terminals that can be connected to the AS/400e server 170.

If you have D, E, or F models, you may find the AS/400e server 170 an attractive purchase option (upgrades are not available). It has considerably more power than many of these models (an F45's CPW rating, for example, is only 17 -- the total available for interactive and server workloads).

If you own a model E50 or larger, consider the flexibility and growth provided by the AS/400e server 720. By moving to the AS/400e 720, you can reuse existing SPD cards, external disk (if it is cost effective), and other features. You can also convert an existing #5042 expansion unit to a #5044 for use on the AS/400e 720.

If you need an application development machine, you will appreciate the "server" model performance provided by the AS/400e 170. For optimum performance, however, use PC-based application development tools (like CODE/400) in combination with the AS/400e server 170.

If you want a Year 2000 test platform, the AS/400e server 170 is very cost effective. When the project is complete, you can use it for other server functions.

If you are considering many types of server functions, the AS/400e server 170 is an ideal platform. It can be used as a secure Internet server, a small data warehouse, a Lotus Domino server, or as a server for other workload. Unlike most installations of Microsoft NT, many of these functions can be run concurrently on the same machine.

AS/400e server 170 Processor #2289 Compared to Processor #2290

Performance (measured as CPW) in the AS/400e server 170 Processor #2289 offers less overall performance than the next processor point available on the AS/400e server 170 Processor #2290.

With the #2289, you cannot attach the System Expansion Unit (#7101/#7102). This limits the number of communication lines, LAN ports, twinaxial workstations, and external media that can be attached.

The #2289 is not intended for customers considering workload such as Java, Domino and other compute intensive applications. When sizing these workloads, refer to capacity planning information to select the appropriate processor.

The #2289 is priced lower than the #2290 yet still delivers performance and upgrade capabilities within the AS/400e server 170 that you need for an entry AS/400e server.

AS/400e server 170 Compared to Model 720

In terms of interactive performance (measured as interactive CPW), the AS/400e 170 does not offer optional interactive features that can deliver multiple levels of interactive CPW. Interactive capability is included as part of the base Model 170 feature processors.

From a server performance standpoint, the largest 720 has more Processor CPW. The AS/400e 720 supports existing SPD cards and some types of external disk that you may own. Software tiers are comparable. If you have a RISC-based AS/400 model, you can upgrade into the AS/400e 720. The AS/400e 720 supports larger capacities and can grow further than the Model 170.

AS/400e server 170 Compared to 7XX servers

AS/400e Server 170:

1.       Wide range of processor upgradability

2.       Packaging economies (with limits on I/O expansion)

3.       Powerful processing for application solutions

AS/400e Servers 720, 730, and 740:

1.       Model/processor upgradability (into and within)

2.       Fully expandable (including interactive features)

3.       Highly scalable processing power (completely balanced)

When The AS/400e Dedicated Server For Domino Is The Better Choice

The AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino is most appropriate for one of the following Domino solution scenarios:

·         One or more stand-alone servers to support one or more Domino applications, including:

o        E-mail

and one of the following capacity statements applies:

·         Your projected Lotus Domino capacity needs are not expected to exceed 70% CPU utilization of the #2409 processor to provide more Domino workload capacity.

or

·         You are willing to deploy multiple AS/400e Dedicated Servers for Domino to meet greater capacity requirements

When The AS/400e server 170 or AS/400e 7XX Servers Are The Better Choice

AS/400e server 170 with standard processor features or 7XX servers are most appropriate for any of the following Domino solution scenarios:

·         Running Domino on the same server with existing non-Domino AS/400 applications (e.g., 5250 applications).

When Further Evaluation is Required

For some Domino solution scenarios, you need to work closely with an IBM or Lotus representative or Business Partner to determine whether AS/400e server 170 with standard processor features or 7XX servers or the new AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino is most appropriate for the proposed environment. In particular, Domino applications that require some degree of integration with DB2 Universal Database for AS/400 data or use some external program calls (e.g., RPG programs, Java) require careful evaluation.

The resources of AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino are focused primarily on the Domino workloads. Their ability to deliver superior Domino price/performance depends on running a workload very close to "pure Domino." A small percentage of the overall processor capacity (10-15%) can be used for non-Domino work, such as routine system administration tasks and non-Domino programs invoked by the Domino application.

In evaluating Domino applications that access non-Domino functions, such as DB2/400 integration or program calls, ensure that the non-Domino functions represent a low percentage of the overall AS/400 utilization. Once non-Domino work reaches a maximum CPU capability on an AS/400e Dedicated Server for Domino, no additional processing power will be available for non-Domino workloads. If the proposed Domino application employs any significant DB2 Universal Database for AS/400 or program integration, a standard AS/400e server model is a better choice.

·         Relative system performance measurements (CPW values) are based on AS/400 environment, commercial processing workload (CPW). The CPW workload is representative of commercial applications, particularly those that do significant database processing in conjunction with journaling and commitment control. CPW values may not be realized in all environments.

Constrained CPW Rating: Maximum memory or DASD configuration become the constraining factor instead of the processor.

Unconstrained CPW Rating: The processor is the first constrained resource. This rating may be used to approximate processor performance, but such values will not be achieved running a full CPW workload on systems, where the unconstrained value is greater than the constrained value, due to maximum memory capacity.

Notes:

OS/400 V4R3, or later, required.

Capacities shown are for models shipped from the plant with prerequisite expansion features. Some combinations of devices may be subject to configuration restrictions.

Relative performance measurements are derived from commercial processing workload (CPW) on AS/400. CPW is representative of commercial applications, particularly those that do significant database processing in conjunction with journaling and commitment control. CPW values may not be realized in all environments.

·         Processor CPW represents the maximum relative performance for this processor feature running commercial processing workloads. Use this value, stated as client/access CPW in previous releases, to compare relative performance between various processor features. The published CPW is achievable when the commercial workload are not constrained by main storage or DASD.

Capacities shown are for models shipped from the plant with prerequisite expansion features. Some combinations of devices may be subject to configuration restrictions.

Relative Performance:

Relative performance measurements are derived by performing various monitored and measured workloads on AS/400e servers. The results (reported values) can be used to compare relative performance characteristics of processor features offered for AS/400e servers.

·         Simple Mail Users (SMU): This relative performance measurement is derived by performing high-volume Lotus Domino mail workloads on Dedicated Domino Processors. Simple Mail Users are representative of mail applications, particularly those that do not perform any database related tasks.

Simple Mail Users represent the estimated number of concurrent light mail users for the Dedicated Domino Processors. These reported values reflect 70% processor utilization to allow for growth and for peak loads in excess of customer workload estimates.

The reported values for CPW do not represent a guaranteed level of capacity to perform non-Domino workloads. The reported CPW may be utilized by System Resource activities and Domino Resource extensions (e.g., database accesses, external program calls, etc). The amount of CPW consumed will reduce the available capacity to perform Simple Mail Users (SMU).

(#0203) Side-by-Side Install

(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of July 2, 2002)

This no-charge specify code is used to alert IBM service representatives of the intention to install a new system concurrently with an existing system, and over time, move applications to the new system. This method may be used when adding a system to an existing complex or network, or when a replaced system is being moved to another location. "AS400 Roadmap for Changing to PowerPC Technology" (SA41-4150) describes this option in detail. IBM services are also available for a charge. This feature is only allowed on IMPI to RISC upgrades.

(#0205) RISC to RISC Data Migration

Used on initial orders for new AS/400e server 170s, this specify code designates that the new server will replace (not upgrade) an installed AS/400 (RISC) model.

When #0205 is on the order, manufacturing will only load SLIC and up through QSYS of OS/400. This will facilitate migrating some of the OS/400 information from the installed system. In addition to the new server, enough DASD must be ordered to hold all the data from the current model, as well as the required software on the new server. Preload of License Programs in manufacturing (#5001 Software Preload Required) is not allowed with #0205.

The new AS/400 RISC server will replace (not upgrade) an installed AS/400 RISC model. The migration process requires that the installed model be at the same version and release level of OS/400 and other Licensed Programs (LPs) as the new server. Financial considerations of upgrades to the installed software should be reviewed as part of the migration planning.

More information, and an updated AS/400 System Upgrade and Data Migration Road Map (RISC-RISC) is available at:

http://www.as400.ibm.com/techstudio/tech_ref/rrmap/

(#2740) PCI RAID Disk Unit Controller

(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of May 31, 2001)

The #2740 is an Ultra SCSI disk and tape controller with a 4MB write- cache that provides RAID-5 protection for internal disk units, as well as concurrent DASD maintenance. Feature #2740 may be installed as an option to the base disk unit controller in the base system unit. When installed in the base system unit, the #2740 controls Ultra, Fast Wide, and Fast Narrow SCSI disk and tape units installed in the base system unit and the System Unit Expansion (#7101).

In addition to providing RAID-5 protection for disks, #2740 also works as a high-performance controller for disks protected by system mirroring or disks with no protection.

The #2740 controller supports a maximum of 10 drives. A minimum of four drives of the same capacity are needed for a valid RAID-5 configuration. A maximum of two arrays are allowed per controller, with a maximum of ten drives allowed per array. All drives in an array must be of the same capacity. Parity is spread across four drives for arrays of four to seven drives. Parity can be spread across either four or eight drives for arrays of eight to ten drives. For systems started with eight to ten drives in an array, the parity for that array will be spread across eight drives. For systems started with less than eight drives in an array (and later field-upgraded eight, nine, or ten drives), the RAID function must be stopped and then started before the parity can be spread across eight drives.

The #2740 also supports the base CD-ROM, and the internal tape unit. High-speed PCI card slots required: One. Maximums: One. Bulk MES Feature #0001 is not supported.

(#2741) PCI RAID Disk Unit Controller

(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of May 31, 2001)

An Ultra SCSI disk and tape controller with a 4MB write-cache that provides RAID-5 protection for internal disk units. #2741 controls Ultra, Fast Wide, and Fast Narrow SCSI disk and tape units installed in the base system unit and the System Expansion Unit (#7101). #2741 is also designed to work as a high-performance controller for disks protected by system mirroring or disks with no protection. In the RAID-5 configuration, disk unit protection is provided at less cost than mirroring, and with greater performance than system checksums.

#2741 supports a maximum of ten drives on the Model 170. A minimum of four drives of the same capacity are needed for a valid RAID-5 configuration. A maximum of three arrays are allowed per controller, with a maximum of ten drives allowed per array. All drives in an array must be of the same capacity.

Parity is spread across four drives for arrays of four to seven drives. Parity can be spread across either four or seven drives for arrays of eight to ten drives. For systems started with eight to ten drives in an array, the parity, will be spread across eight drives. For systems started with less than eight drives in an array and later upgraded to eight, nine, or ten drives, the RAID-5 function must be stopped and then started before the parity will be spread across eight drives.

#2741 supports hardware disk compression, enabled by the integration of data compression hardware directly into the data-flow of the controller. Data is compressed and decompressed without intervention from the AS/400 system processor. Disk compression for the 17.54GB disk units requires the support of OS/400 V4R4.

Capacity gains may vary as a function of the compression algorithm and the characteristics of the data. Typically two times compression can be expected, with up to four times possible. The disk capacity gains from disk compression are not included in the maximum AS/400 model disk capacity limits.

Disk compression can be used with or without BRMS Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) as part of a total storage management strategy including high-performance disk, compressed disk, and tape automation.

Compressed disks have the same disk subsystem availability options (i.e., RAID-5, mirroring) as uncompressed disks, with no additional restrictions. Disk compression is supported only in user auxiliary storage pools (user ASPs). The user selects which disk arms to compress via a new Disk Manager screen, and disk capacity screens reflect the projected disk capacity and the percent used.

Due to the overhead of compression/decompression, and the variations in the length of data written to disk, the performance of compressed disk will in most cases be slower than uncompressed, high-performance disk drives. Access additional information at:

www.as400.ibm.com/hsmcomp
