The IBM 9401 is an AS/400e-server for single-
and multi-user environments.
Model Abstract 9401-P03: (For IBM US, No Longer Available as of July 1,
1997)
The AS/400 Advanced Portable Model P03 has 8MB
of memory, 1GB of direct access storage devices (DASD), and two communications
lines. The P03 is expandable to 56MB of memory and 4GB of DASD. It is available
in specially priced packages. Each package is complete with hardware and
selected software required by a majority of users. Three twinaxial packages are
available, one for entry and two for growth. Entry and growth packages are also
available as LAN connected systems, either Token-Ring or Ethernet. In addition,
a pre-defined package is available for use as a server. These packages are
specially priced and enable easy ordering of the system. The AS/400 Advanced
Portable is pre-loaded with Version 3 Release 1 of OS/400, Client Access/400
and Query/400.
Model Highlights 9401-P03:
The IBM 9401 is an Application System/400 that
consists of two versions, both for single- and multi-user environments. One is
a Portable AS/400 version. The other is an AS/400 Advanced Entry version.
Model Description 9401-P03: The AS/400 Advanced Portable can be used for:
The 840MB QIC Mini Tape Unit is a feature for
the AS/400 Advanced Portable. It provides a lower priced alternative, and a
convenient, smaller-sized tape cartridge than the traditional QIC devices.
The IBM 9401 Application System/400 Portable
is an AS/400 system unit designed for the single- and multi-user environments.
Its compact size and portability allow for easy transportation of the system
between work and other locations. AS/400 software that currently operates on
the 9402, 9404 and 9406 will run on the Portable system. This includes the more
than 20,000 applications currently available for the AS/400 system, including
client/server applications. Approximately the size and weight of a fully packed
attache case, the AS/400 Portable comes with a carrying case that can hold the
system and a notebook computer. The IBM ThinkPad and other notebook computers
are supported. The hard-sided case, with the added benefit of wheels and a
handle, may be checked as airline luggage. To meet the IBM protection standard
for shipping, it is significantly larger than the soft-sided case. Any
twinaxial device supported by the AS/400 system may also be used as a
workstation.
AS/400 Function in a Compact Package
AS/400 Advanced Portable provides full OS/400
function in a compact package and is designed to meet the needs of customers
who require a single or multi-user system that is easily transportable and can
also run a wide range of AS/400 applications, including client/server
applications.
AS/400 Advanced Portable can also be used for
development and testing of new applications, as well as training and customer
support activities consistent with supporting multiple, remote or distributed
systems. It is an ideal solution when portability outweighs the need for
growth.
The AS/400 Advanced Portable's lightweight and
compact carrying case allows it to be easily transported by car or airplane,
thereby saving shipping costs and eliminating possible delivery delays. AS/400
Advanced Portable is approximately the size and weight of a fully packed
attache case. The optional soft sided carrying case can hold both the AS/400
Advanced Portable and a notebook computer. A hard sided carrying case, suitable
for checking as luggage, is also available.
AS/400 Advanced Portable Packages
To simplify ordering, the AS/400 Advanced
Portable is offered in pre-defined packages: Three twinaxial-based systems,
three LAN based systems, and a server.
Each package is a complete system, including
pre-loaded software required by a majority of users (OS/400, CA/400, and
Query/400). The package prices do not include the price of the software.

TAPE DEVICES
3450 Model 001
The 3450 Model 001 is an external 1.2GB
1/4-inch tape drive which attaches to the AS/400 Advanced Portable via the base
Multi-Function I/O processor and has an effective data rate of 300KB per second
when operating using the QIC-1000 Data Cartridge media. It can be used for
alternate IPL, save/restore, program interchange, and 1/4-inch cartridge tape
interchange with other AS/400 systems. Full interchange of data is supported
with all the standard and optional 1/4-inch cartridge tape units provided on
the 9402, 9404 and 9406 system models. (The 3450 Model 001 is approved for
operation in residential environments.)
To attach the AS/400 Advanced Portable to a
3450 Model 001 External 1/4-inch Cartridge Tape Drive, the following cable
attachment feature is required:
Description Part Number Feature Number
--------------------------- ----------- --------------
1.2m System to Device Cable 21H0197 2856
Note: Cable features used with the 9401 Models P01 and P02 cannot be used with
the AS/400 Advanced Portable.
7207 Model 012
Though the 7207 was supported on the 9401
Models P01 and P02, it is not recommended for use on the AS/400 Advanced
Portable. Because this tape drive is an RS/6000 product, there is built-in
microcode which OS/400 may erase when doing an IPL. In some instances, it may
be impossible to again update the microcode for RS/6000 compatibility. If you
have previously IPLed the 7207 on a 9401, and do not anticipate a need for
transferring use between the 9401 and RS/6000, you may continue to utilize the
7207 on the AS/400 Advanced Portable.
To attach the AS/400 Advanced Portable to a
7207 Model 12, the following cable attachment feature is required:
Description Part Number Feature Number
--------------------------- ----------- --------------
1.2m System to Device Cable 21H0197 2856
Note: Cable features used with the 9401 Models P01 and P02 cannot be used with
the AS/400 Advanced Portable models.
REMOTE WORKSTATION CONTROLLERS
5251 Model 12
The 5251 Model 12 may be used to attach remote
workstations. It is a workstation controller and communications unit for remote
attachment of multiple display stations and printers. Client Access/400 access
by Personal Computers and Personal System/2s attached to the 5251 Model 12 is
not supported.
5394 Remote Control Unit
The 5394 Remote Control Unit attaches up to
sixteen 5250 type displays, printers, IBM Personal Computers and Personal
System/2s, and Personal System/55 (AP only) to an AS/400 via a communications
link.
5494 Remote Control Unit
The 5494 Remote Control Unit manages the
operation of workstations and workstation communications to the AS/400. The IBM
5494-EXT replaces the IBM 5494-001 and the IBM 5494-002. The 5494 now has only
one model, to which features are added customizing the 5494 for operational
needs.
The 5494-EXT supports the attachment of up to
28 twinaxial devices. With the 5494 Twinaxial Expansion Kit installed, up to 56
twinaxial devices can communicate to the AS/400 through a Type 2.1 connection.
By installing the 5494 Token-Ring Adapter, the
5494-EXT has all the functional capabilities of the withdrawn 5494-002. It can
communicate with an AS/400 system over a Token-Ring network while supporting up
to 28 twinaxial devices, or can support Token-Ring attached devices while
communicating with an AS/400 over an SDLC, X.21, or X.25 connection. In this
configuration, the 5494 supports up to 80 devices of which up to 28 could be
twinaxial attached and the rest Token-Ring attached.
The Ethernet Adapter supports IEEE 802.2
logical link control and IEEE 802.3 or DIX Version 2.0 frame format using a
10BASE2 (BNC), a 10BASE5 (15-pin D-SUB), or a 10BASE-T (RJ-45) connector. The
5494 Ethernet AUI Cable allows the attachment to an Ethernet Network using
thick coaxial (10BASE5) cabling. Ethernet support allows the 5494 to be used as
a gateway to an Ethernet LAN or attach to an AS/400 System via an Ethernet
Network.
The 5494 Utility Program allows the selection
of Concurrent Diagnostics, configuration information, or to reset and restart
the 5494 Remote Control Unit from a remote Programmable Workstation (PWS). The
PWS no longer needs to be directly attached to a 5494 to provide access to
remote 5494s from a central site.
The IBM 5494 Release 3.0 microcode supports
all the functions of the IBM 5494 Release 2.0 microcode and the following
enhancements:
·
Support of OS/400 Version 3 Release 1.

6250 X Terminal Family
The IBM 6250 X Terminal offers
high-performance, local-area network (LAN)-attached X terminals that provide a
low-cost, desk-top platform for connectivity to the AS/400* and UNIX based host
platforms (such as the RS/6000*). The 6250 X Terminal supports multiple 5250
emulation sessions to one or more AS/400s using an X Windows interface. The X
terminal can also access UNIX host applications using either the memory
efficient 6250 Window manger or the industry standard Motif** Window Manager.
Either window manager provides a superb graphics platform for applications in
the X Window environment.
The 6250 X Terminal Family includes four
models...color and monochrome Ethernet models and color and monochrome
Token-Ring models. They come with a base of 4MB of memory, expandable to 20MB
or 16MB, depending on the model. The displays both have a resolution of
1024X768 and the color models support 256 colors.
The 6250 X Terminal requires one AS/400 on the
LAN to have the IBM 6250 X Terminal Program for OS/400 (PRPQ 5799-QGP)
installed. The X terminal down-loads the X window environment from the AS/400
and then can communicate with other hosts on the LAN.
The X terminals include an integrated, swivel
display, keyboard, three button mouse and license to use the 6250 program. The
X terminals have an easy to use setup menu for initial configuration and
standard LAN connectors for the most popular Ethernet or Token-Ring
connections.
Personal System/2 Support
The AS/400 supports the IBM Personal System/2
models and the IBM Personal Typing System. For information regarding attachment
of specific Personal System/2 models refer to the model Sales Manual
description under "List of Supported Products" for AS/400 attachment
hardware and under "IBM Software Compatibility" for supported AS/400
software.

MISCELLANEOUS DEVICES
5259 Migration Data Link
The 5259 Migration Data Link is a stand-alone
device that offers a cabled data path between the IBM System/36 or System/38
and the IBM AS/400 system. Systems are connected through their respective
workstation controllers.
The Migration Data Link, together with
programming support provided by the IBM AS/400 System/36 Migration Aid
(5727-MG1) or the IBM AS/400 System/38 Migration Aid (5714-MG1) and the IBM
Operating System/400 Version 3 Release 0.5 or later, provides for data
send/receive functions between systems. In addition, the Migration Data Link
provides access between systems by providing hot key availability from up to
seven workstations per Migration Data Link.
8228 Multi-Station Access Unit
The 8228 Multi-Station Access Unit or
equivalent may be required to attach the AS/400 Advanced Portable to your
token-ring network. The IBM 8228 is a compact device which can be mounted in a
standard 19-inch wiring closet rack, or placed wherever you have space. It
provides for attachment of up to eight devices to your LAN, and can be used in
multiples to accommodate all your devices. The IBM 8228 is designed for smaller
token-ring LANs and does not support network management programs and alerts.
9910 Uninterruptible Power Systems
9910 Uninterruptible Power Systems: An
Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) significantly improves system uptime by
minimizing the impact from power fluctuations and outages. The UPS will protect
both the hardware and software assets and provide power for a limited period of
time, when required. If the power outage continues, the UPS notifies the AS/400
to start a controlled shutdown that helps save the customer's data. The AS/400 Advanced
Portable does not contain an internal Battery Backup Unit (BBU) and therefore
an external UPS is recommended. The UPS has roughly the equivalent cost of a
BBU while providing additional function.
The UPSs offered are manufactured by Best
Power Technology, Inc. and Exide Electronics, Inc. and offer a two- or
five-year warranty (UPS and battery), dependent on the model and manufacturer.
The following UPSs are available with the
AS/400 Advanced Portable:
Refer to the country table in announcement
letter 195-016, dated 02/07/95. For additional information on the UPSs
contained in the country table refer to announcement letter 194-112, dated
05/03/94, for models 9910-B08 and 9910-B09 and announcement letter 194-315,
dated 10/04/94, for model 9910-B22.

·
Temperature: 10 to 38 degrees C (50 to 100 degrees F)
The IBM 3450 Model 001 tape drive and the new QIC
Mini Tape cartridge have a relative humidity range of 20 to 80 percent.
The AS/400 Advanced Portable should always be
used with a grounded AC outlet. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure a
properly grounded outlet is available.
The operation and reliability of this product
can be adversely affected by exposure to extreme temperature conditions, such
as those that might develop within an automobile.
The following table can be used for
acclimation times if the system has been in a hot environment, in the
soft-sided case, for an extended period of time.
| Acclimation Time
Temperature | (in soft-sided case)
--------------------
104 F | 0.25 hrs
(40 C) |
--------------------
122 F | 1.5 hrs
(50 C) |
--------------------
140 F | 2.5 hrs
(60 C) |
"Temperature" is the temperature
which the machine is allowed to heat up to. "Acclimation Time" is the
time required for the system to reach a point below the allowable maximum
operating temperature. Since condensation is not a concern, when bringing a hot
system into a cooler environment, the carrying case should be removed.
In addition, if the machine is moved between
places with very different temperature and humidity levels, condensation can
build up and damage the equipment. When traveling, allow sufficient time for
the equipment to adjust to environmental changes before unpacking or connecting
AC power.
The approximate acclimation times for a cold
AS/400 Advanced Portable in the carrying case are:
| Acclimation Time
Temperature | (in soft-sided case)
--------------------
10 C | 0 hrs
(50 F) |
--------------------
0 C | 2.5 hrs
(32 F) |
--------------------
-10 C | 3.5 hrs
(14 F) |
--------------------
-30 C | 5.5 hrs
(-22 F) |
--------------------
"Temperature" is the temperature
that the machine is allowed to cool down to prior to bringing it indoors.
"Acclimation Time" is the time required for the machine's temperature
to rise above the room dew point temperature in a room at 68 degrees-F and 40-45%
relative humidity. (The machine will not actually be at room temperature, but
will be warm enough that condensation will not occur.) The machine should be
left in the carrying case during this time.
For rooms with higher then 68 degrees F, Dew
Point temperatures, a combination of temperature and relative humidity that
yields higher levels of airborne moisture, the acclimation times will need to
increase.
Failure to permit sufficient time for the
AS/400 Advanced Portable to acclimate itself, per the previous tables,
constitutes system misuse and will void the warranty.
AS/400 Advanced Portable not upgradable to any
other AS/400 model, nor are the 9401 P01 or the P02 upgradable to the AS/400
Advanced Portable.
Please note that though the 7207-012 was
supported on the 9401 Models P01 and P02, it is not recommended on the AS/400
Advanced Portable (see text in feature support section).
This product must be in a vertical position to
operate properly.
To maintain the system unit, a system
configuration in needed which consists of the AS/400 Advanced Portable system
unit and a system console. The system console may include any supported
display, IBM Personal Computer, or notebook computer.
Note: The PCMCIA adapter (P/N 92G5360) is not included.
In order to support the system console
requirement for purposes of service on portable or personal computers, a
terminal emulator program is required, (for example, DP5250). Client Access/400
does not provide this function. The console should be located within six meters
(20 feet) of the system control panel, which must be readable from the console.
Although required, the system console is not a component of the base system
unit.
A printer is not required for service,
however, IBM's ability to diagnose the system is greatly enhanced when a
printer is available.
This Product requires an IBM 3450 Model 001 or
QIC Mini Tape Unit for removable media functions and when an alternate IPL
device is required.
