Abstract: ECA899: ECC & MECHANICAL ERRORS IN 2.5GB IDE HDD
The purpose of this ECA is to correct a potential problem of multiple ECC errors or mechanical failures in certain models of Western Digital hardfiles.
Affected hardfiles are certain models of Western Digital 2.5GB IDE hardfiles.

IBM FRU Part Numbers :
A special diagnostic utility is avalaible via the HelpCenter Level 2 Support Center called the "Verscan Utility."
This utility can inspect the health of Western Digital files currently installed.
IBM Enhanced Diagnostic Hardfile Test Diskette - This is a custom developed diagnostic tool to be used to determine the health of the hardfile and also REPAIR any ECC errors not related to this problem.
This diskette is also available through the Helpcenter Level 2 Support Center.
A limited number of IBM PC 300GL and PC 300PL systems were manufactured using a Western Digital 2.5gb hardfile.
These systems may exhibit intermittent "Drive not Ready" status or display indications that ECC errors exist on the drive.
In some cases the drive is no longer functional.
Upon detection of possible errors, replace the hardfile with IBM FRU P/N 36L8811.
These failures are associated with an increase in the operating environments temperature and humidity, usually during the hot summer months.
Not all Western Digital 2.5gb hardfiles will exhibit these symptoms.
This ECA provides for the replacement of a Western Digital 2.5gb hardfile exhibiting the symptoms stated above.
The PHYSICAL CHECK section of this ECA lists the IBM FRU part numbers of the affected drives.
NO OTHER WESTERN DIGITAL DRIVE IS AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM.
