3com 3c509 EtherLink III / slot 2


PROBLEM - Cannot initialize the 3com 3c509 EtherLink III card in slots 2 or 3. adapter diagnostics may also fail or the LAN software may not initialize or find the adapter card, especially in slots 2 or 3, slot 3 being furthest from the motherboard on the riser card.
Machines AFFECTED - all 6381 models.

SOLUTION - It was found that some versions of the riser card, which had just started to circulate in manufacturing, were susceptible to noise on the at-bus' reset drv line. the combination of the 3com card's layout and design coupled with our riser card's new layout made for an amplification of noise crosscoupling over from the data lines which ran parallel to the reset line.
FIX
An EC was released to fix the imbed riser card with a 330pf SMT capacitor between gnd(b1) and reset drv(b2) on the backsIDE of the riser card's connector farthest from the motherboard. The EC is 12604832 and the new FRU number is 88G4178.
