Operating Requirements (2524)

Operating Requirements

The following describes the operations that take place after power is applied and until the minimum operating requirements are met.

Power-ON Self-Test (POST)

The POST is initiated autom. each time the system is powered on. The POST is a series of system checks and initializations that verify the correct operation of the computer. The POST checks only those areas that permit the system to be operational enough to run advanced diagnostic tests. The POST can detect two types of errors: critical and noncritical

Critical errors  either prevent the system from operating or cause incorrect results that are apparent to the user. Examples of critical errors include microprocessor or interrupt controller errors. If the POST detects a critical error, the microprocessor attempts to display the error and all testing stops.

Noncritical errors  cause incorrect results that may not be apparent to the user. An example of a noncritical error is a serial communication failure. For a noncritical error the microprocessor displays an error code and the testing stops.

After a successful POST, control is given to the BIOS routine called the bootsrap loader. The bbotstrap loader attempts to load the operating system from the diskette drive, IC Card slot, and hard disk card in this sequence.

Memory Requirements and Limitations

The computer has 4MB / 8MB of memory built into the memory card and can be expanded up to 20MB / 24MB by installing any one of different capacity of IC DRAM cards into the DRAM slot on the system board.
