What are the system requirements? Minimum Requirements: • An ISDN BRI (Basic Rate Interface) line is required from your local telephone service provider. See the Ordering ISDN Services guide provided with the unit. • IBM compatible PC with 386 or higher processor and Windows 3.x or Windows 95. • Standard high speed serial port with 16550 UART for speeds up to 115Kbps. A serial port with a 16650 UART is recommended for data rates of 128Kbps* or higher (Boca product code IO650). 2. What are the specifications of the WEBGLIDER? • ISDN terminal adapter with built-in NT-1, data port, and two telephone ports (POTS). • Data transmission rates up to 128,000bps* with both B-Channels. • 300Kbps to 230Kbps* asynchronous speed. • ISDN U-interface (connects directly to ISDN line). • Two simultaneous calls (voice, Group III fax or modem), a telephone call with data over one ISDN channel, or data over both ISDN channels. • Hayes "AT" commands, enhanced for ISDN. • V.120 rate adaptation. • Easy setup with Windows configuration utility. • Power-on-self-test. • Flash memory download capability for quick firmware updates. 3. What type of serial port is recommended for the WEBGLIDER to be connected to? The minimum requirement is to have a high speed serial port with at least a 16550 UART. For connections of 128Kbps* or higher it is recommended that you use a serial port with a 16650 UART such as the Boca Research IO650. Earlier versions of the UART did not have the ability to work effectively with data rates above 9600bps. You can use the MSD.EXE utility, provided with Windows 3.x and DOS 6.0 and higher, to determine the type of UART on your serial port. Section C - Configuration Questions ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Can I send and receive faxes with the WEBGLIDER? The WEBGLIDER does not have the ability to send and receive faxes by itself. You can however, connect an analog fax machine or a fax/modem to the POTs ports to send and receive faxes. 2. Will the WEBGLIDER connect to a standard analog modem? You must use a standard analog modem, connected to the POTs ports on the WEBGLIDER to make analog modem connections. The WEBGLIDER alone will not make analog connections. 3. How many analog devices can I attach to the POTs ports on the WEBGLIDER? You can have up to three analog devices connected to the WEBGLIDER's POTs ports. The WEBGLIDER has a maximum Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) of 3. The REN is the quantity of ringers that can be connected to a telephone line and still all ring. Some telephones, or other phone devices, have REN values that could be more or less than one. The total RENs of all telephones connected to the WEBGLIDER must not exceed 3 or some or all of the ringers may not operate. 4. Do you have an ISDN BBS so I can test my WEBGLIDER? Yes, Boca Research does have an ISDN BBS setup for testing your ISDN connection and for downloading the latest drivers and flash ROM upgrades. The number for the Boca ISDN BBS is (561) 997-9159. 5. I cannot place long distance calls. Why? Contact your ISDN line provider and ensure that a long distance carrier was setup for your ISDN line. 6. Can I plug an ISDN digital telephone into the WEBGLIDER's POTs ports? No. You can only plug analog devices into the POTs ports. An ISDN digital telephone cannot be used with the WEBGLIDER. 7. Can I have an ISDN digital connection and an analog modem connection at the same time? Yes, as long as the analog modem is not using the same B channel as the RS-232 port that the WEBGLIDER uses for digital connections. 8. What initialization string should I use in my communications software for making V.120 connections? Use the following initialization string for making V.120 connections required for ISDN BBS services and on-line services such as Compuserve, Prodigy or America On-line: AT&Q0&C1&D2 You may need to add a special character (such as ^M) to the end of this initialization string if your software requires it for a carriage return. 9. What initialization string should I use for making PPP connections? Use the following initialization string for making PPP connections used by most ISDN Internet service providers: AT&Q3&C1&D2 10. How can I achieve 128Kbps* using two B channels with the WEBGLIDER? Currently the WEBGLIDER supports using two B channels for 128Kbps* when connecting to another WEBGLIDER. Please refer to the section of the WEBGLIDER's Reference Guide on "Making an Aggregated Call" for instructions on using two B channels with the WEBGLIDER. 11. Why do I get garbage when trying to connect to an ISDN BBS service or other on-line services? The WEBGLIDER may be in PPP mode. You will need to send an AT&Q0 command to the WEBGLIDER to set it for V.120 mode. 12. Should I set my communications software to drop DTR on hang-up? Yes, this option should be enabled , if your communications software gives you the option to drop DTR on hang-up. * 128Kbps is achieved using both B-channels between two Webgliders using rate aggregation. ** 230Kbps is achieved using both B-channels between two Webgliders using rate aggregation, data compression and a high speed serial port with a 16650 UART. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright (c), 1995, Boca Research, Inc.
