What is the Online Express 14.4? The Online Express is an economical internal 14.4Kbps Fax/Data modem with fax and Data software for Windows. 2. How can the Online Express be helpful for me? The Online Express will allow you to send and receive faxes from any application at speeds up to 14.4Kbps. It will let you send and receive data files at speeds up to 14.4Kbps. 3. What software is bundled with the Online Express? - Faxworks fax/data software for Windows by Global Village Communications - Online Express Driver and Utilities diskette - Online services diskettes 4. Where can the Online Express be purchased? Boca Research enhancement products are available worldwide through authorized Boca Research retail stores, distributors, or many end-user catalogs. All Boca Reseach products carry a five-year warranty. Section B - Hardware Questions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. What are the specifications of this modem? - This modem supports up to 14.4Kbps data and fax transmissions. - Supports Class 1 fax specifications - Group 3 send and receive fax capability - Protocol compatibility: V.32bis, V.32, V.22bis, V.22, V.21; Bell 212A, Bell 103; V.42/MNP2-4, V.42bis/MNP5; V.17, V.29, V.27ter, V.21 channel 2 2. What hardware settings does the Online Express support? Com port: 1, 2, 3 or 4 IRQ: 3, 4, 5, 7 or 9 I/O addresses: 100, 180, 280, 300, or 380 3. What chipset does the Online Express use? AT&T V32-INTFC2 chipset 4. Why does the Online Express use a driver? Windows normally communicates to serial devices, using COMM.DRV, through the UART chip on the device. The Online Express modem does not use a standard UART chip for serial communications. Instead it uses a driver which intercepts COMM.DRV and sends the data through the driver instead. This procedure is a much more cost effective way of communicating since UART technology is very expensive. 5. Why does the Online Express use an I/O address? The driver for this modem requires a separate I/O address to operate. 6. What is the best com port for this modem? You should run the Comcheck utility, supplied with the modem, before installation. Comcheck will examine your system and determine what settings to configure the modem for. 7. How do I configure third party communications software to operate with the Online Express? Most communications software will have an option for a Hayes Compatible modem. This is the best setting for the Online Express. Do not select a Boca 14.4, because the Online Express uses different set of commands than other Boca 14.4 Fax/modems. 8. My modem works in Windows but not in DOS. First, make sure you have driver version 1.22, which includes DOS drivers. If not, you can download this version from the Boca Research BBS. The file name is M144AI.ZIP, located in file area 14. If you already have the correct driver version, make sure the DOS driver is enabled in the Modem Setup program. This will add the driver to your CONFIG.SYS file so that it is loaded during boot up. 9. What is the recommended initilization string for the Online Express? AT&F&C1&D2 You may need to add ^M to the end of this initilization string if your software requires it for a carriage return. 10. I can’t log on to America Online. You need to set the America Online software to 9600bps instead of 14.4Kbps. America Online is aware of this and developing a fix in there next software release. Section C - Faxworks Software by Global Village Communications -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Can I use Faxworks to call bulletin board services? Yes. Faxworks includes a data terminal for data communications, such as bulletin board services and file transfers. 2. Does Faxworks need to be running to receive faxes? Yes. The Faxworks application must be running to receive faxes. 3. Can I fax my existing documents directly from my word processor application? Faxworks allows you to fax directly from any Windows applications, so you can fax your existing documents directly from the Windows word processor you already use. 4. Will Faxworks fax from DOS applications. No. Faxworks is a Windows application and only has the ability to fax from Windows applications. 5. How do I manually receive a fax? The manual receive option is in the Fax Viewer screen. From the viewer screen pull down the FAX menu and go to Manual Receive. 6. Should I set Faxworks as my default printer?
