Need help setting up access to network printer. Have a HP LaserJet 4+ attached via parallel port to a RS/6000 7012-250 running AIX 4.3.3.11/Netscape 4.8 that cannot handle Postscript sent to it by Netscape.Have a HP LaserJet 4500N on a P2P Workgroup that will. The RS/6000 is attached to the P2P network for it's internet connection. Here is what I did. Using smit installed the software for the HP LaserJet 4500N off CD3 Using smit installed the software for the HP JetDirect Network Printer off CD3 The next procedure failed error "host name 192.168.0.109 not valid" and "host name 131.181.153.109 not valid" see printer config below. Using smit/print spooling/add a print queque chose HP JetDirect Chose HP chose HP4500 chose Do NOT make this system a BOOTP/TFTP server ( my reasoning here was the printer is on a P2P network and did not want the RS/6000 to take control as this may preculde several Windows systems getting access to the printer which they already have) Description left as Hewlett_Packard Color LaserJet 4500 ( Can I alter this to 4500Dup as it is called in each Win Computer) Names of New Print Queques PCL left field blank POSTSCRIPT PSHP HP-GL/2 left field blank Printer Connection Characteristics * Host Name of the JetDirect Card 192.168.0.109 ( tried again with 131.181.153.109) PORT 9100 From the RS\6000 I can ping 192.168.0.109 but cannot ping (nor could WinXP) 131.181.153.109 Reading the manuals, help and red books, they are very light on in specific detail. I could not find my siuation Googling but gather smit will not write the correct lines in various files like /etc/hostlpd my file is empty /etc/hostsequiv my file is empty /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 loopback local host 192.168.0.166 oldage this is my RS/6000 computer /etc/qconfig HP4PCL: device=lp0 lp0: file = /dev/lp0 header = never trailer = never access = both backend = /usr/lib/lpd/piobe In this last file only my HP LaserJet 4+ is mentioned attached to the parallel port. Smit supported printers show 4+ and 4500 Smit defined printers only shows the 4+. I presume this is because the 4500 queque is not set up. Here is the 4500 printer configuration print out EIO ColorLasetJet 4500 Configuration JetDirect Configuration Page GENERAL INFORMATION HP JETDIRECT J3113A FIRMWARE REVISION: G.08.04 LAN HW ADDRESS:, 001083A109EB PORT SELECT: RJ45 PORT CONFIG: 100TX HALF AUTO NEGOTIATION: ON MFG ID: 39423942900719 DATE MANUFACTURED: 10/1999 I/O CARD READY PROTOCOL INFORMATION SNMP SET CMTY NAME: NONE TCP/ IP STATUS: READY HOST NAME: 131.181.153.109 CONFIG BY: DHCP IP ADDRESS: 192.168.0.109 SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0 DEF.
