Older Versions of Acrobat Reader for Older Computers If you need an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader because the computer you're using cannot run the latest release, you can obtain it as directed below. CIT has obtained a license from Adobe to distribute this viewing software at no charge to members of the Cornell community. If you are a registered student, staff, or faculty member, then you may freely copy and use the Acrobat Reader viewer software, but you may not distribute it. Note: you will need to enter your name and e-mail address into your World Wide Web program so that it can get Acrobat and PDF files. To do this in Netscape 4.0, choose Preferences from the Edit menu, click on Identity, and enter your name and full-email address in the appropriate entry areas. To do this in Netscape 3.0, choose Preferences from the Options menu, then pick "Mail and News" and enter your name and full e-mail address in the appropriate entry areas. Older versions of Acrobat are available for: Windows Macintosh DOS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows System requirements: Requires 386-, 486-, or Pentium(R)- based processor, Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5 or greater, 4MB RAM or greater. The Reader is delivered as an executable file (acroread.exe): transfer it to a temporary directory on your hard drive. You must then install the Reader by double-clicking on the acroread.exe file in your File Manager (found in the Main program group in Windows). You will be prompted by the Acrobat installer for installation information. You may install the Reader in the directory of your choice. Get old version of Acrobat for Windows Macintosh System requirements: a Macintosh with 68020 or greater processor or PowerPC, Apple System Software 7.0 or greater, 2MB of application RAM (3.5MB of application RAM for PowerPC version). Version 2.1 for a Macintosh (any type). This version is recommended, but the installer program can take a long time to download it because it contains software for both kinds of Macintosh computers, and is therefore a very large file. See below about using FTP as a faster means of obtaining the software. Version 2.0 for a "regular" Mac. This older version takes less time to transfer and should work just as well as the newer version. You will need some 12 MB of disk space to download version 2.1 of the installer program and complete the installation process. You will need less space for the older version, perhaps 5 MB. (The final Acrobat files are much smaller, but the space needed to decompress them and restore them to a format that your Mac can use is substantial.) Once the Acrobat Reader has been installed, you will be able to free up most of this disk space by discarding the installer and its associated files. The download process takes some 15 minutes with a mid-level Macintosh on ethernet. With older computers or phone-line connections to campus, it can take significantly longer. If you are comfortable with using File Transfer (Fetch) you will find it faster to retrieve the Acrobat installer (either version) from the CIT FTP server. Go to the directory /pub/cit-pubs/acrobat/mac and retrieve the installer file you need. Because the FTP version does not need to be processed, it requires less time to download and install and the rest of the information below does not apply to you. Run the installer program after retrieving it, and then discard it after Acrobat has been installed. The Acrobat reader installer program is delivered as a stuffed file when you get it via this Web page. You must have a copy of StuffIt Expander in order to convert the Acrobat installer program to a form that can run on your computer. If you start the Netscape program from Bear Access, you will receive a copy of StuffIt Expander along with the Netscape files through the Service Update Server automatically, however you may need to restart your computer and rebuild its desktop in order for Netscape to "see" StuffIt Expander. To rebuild your desktop, hold down the command and option keys as the computer starts up. When you see a message about rebuilding the desktop, click OK, and release the keys. The process of dowloading version 2.1 of the Acrobat installer software places 3 files on your drive: ACROREAD.MAC (2782K) is placed in the folder of your choice; ACROREAD.hqx (5118K) and ACROREAD.MAC.hqx (3780K) are placed in your hard drive. Version 2.0's files are smaller. Once the installer has been unstuffed, double-click on its icon (ACROREAD.MAC) in order to install Acrobat. If you have StuffIt Expander on your computer and you get Acrobat via World Wide Web, then your computer will attempt to "unstuff" the file automatically. If the automatic unstuffing fails due to low memory, you should quit Netscape, then run StuffIt Expander manually. When the installation process is complete, you should throw away acroread.mac, acroread.hqx, and acroread.mac.hqx. DOS The DOS Reader requires DOS 3.3 or greater, 2 MB of RAM, and 5MB of disk space. The Reader is delivered as a self-extracting executable file (acrodos.exe): transfer it to a temporary directory on your hard drive. After running this file, you must install the Reader by running install.exe. You will be prompted by the Acrobat installer for installation information. You may install the Reader in the directory of your choice. Get Acrobat for DOS
