RS/6000 Power Station 7012-320 32mb Gt3i video 6091-19i terminal AIX4.2.1.0 No GUI installed, command line only. reply mesg n on some of logged-in terminals. gheist Thanks for reply. On this computer there is only one terminal and one user root. Dont realise the significance of your reply to my problem. Anyway, I typed in #mesg n and shut down, but still got the I/O errors on the screen. I dont want to just hide the messages but find out and fix what is causing them. Any other suggestions ? Please note I am a real newbie to AIX. shutdown writes four beeps to every terminal with "wall". I read up about the wall command but my problem on why these errors are occuring is still not answered. Could you please explain further what is causing the I/O errors and how to correct them. Thanks Do you get I/O error when running wall "Some Text" ???? If yes - I already explained. If no - run each and every command in /etc/rc.shutdown and look which one gives this error. I log in as root. I then run wall as follows #wall Nothing happens and have to Ctrl+D to get back to # I this what you mean by running wall ? Looked in /etc and there is no file rc.shutdown Ran #find / -name rc.shutdown -print and after a few moments the # appeards on the next line. There are no messages on the screen. Thanks for your patience. Your system is quite old. Even in case of problems there might be no solution. I meant wall "Message to all users" blank message does not send. Shutdown is shell script. You can look it over, and see what causes problem, if not wall line.
