The driver to use depends on the application and protocols required. OS/2 network support is provided by an NDIS 2 driver. This includes Novell workstation support. There is no separate ODI driver for OS/2. Novell NetWare servers version 3.12 and later are supported by the 32-bit ODI driver. Windows 95, 98, NT 3.51 and NT 4 support is provided by the NDIS 3 and NDIS 4 miniport drivers. For Windows 95, this includes support for remote unattended installation. The NDIS 4 driver contains a card enabler for Cardbus adapters, where native card and socket services are not available. For Windows NT 4 on non-intel platforms, drivers are available from the Madge Web site. UNIX drivers are not supplied with LSS 6.1(1) but are available from the Madge web site (www.madge.com) for Solaris, SCO, Linux and UnixWare. These drivers are updated regularly and support is added for the latest UNIX releases and for the latest adapters. With the exception of the Linux driver, adapter support on these drivers is limited to the Smart range of Madge adapters. Drivers for Apple Macintosh are not supplied with LSS 6.1(1) but are available from the Madge web site (www.madge.com). Drivers for Windows 2000 are supplied by Microsoft on the Beta or release CDs. Updated drivers may also be available for download from the Madge web site (www.madge.com). SECTION 4: LSS 6.1(1) important notes ====================================== * Release 6.1(1) of LAN Support Software (LSS 6.1(1)) includes updated versions of the following drivers and utilities: NDIS3 Miniport driver for Win95/WinNT, MDGMPORT.SYS (I386 only) NDIS4 Miniport driver for Win98/WinNT, MDGNDIS4.SYS (I386 only) Windows 95/98 Installation file, NETMADGE.INF Windows NT Installation file, OEMSETUP.INF Novell Server/Client32 ODI Driver, CMDGODI.LAN Novell DOS ODI driver, MADGEODI.COM 16-bit NDIS2 driver for DOS/Windows 3.1, MDGND.DOS 16-bit NDIS2 driver for OS/2, MDGND.OS2 * LSS 6.1(1) also includes the following utilities: DOS Diagnostics and Configuration tool, ASSIST.EXE Windows driver management utility, QUICKREV.EXE DOS quick diagnostics tool, TRTEST.EXE Windows 95 driver upgrade tool, QUICKREV.EXE Windows 95/NT driver status viewer, MDGLOG95.EXE Win32 Version information viewer, MVER32.EXE Selective Device driver loader, IFADAP.EXE Device identifier tool, WHATADAP.EXE Version information viewer, MVER.EXE Card Services emulator for DOS, MADGECS.EXE DOS Suspend mode actuator, MDGSLEEP.EXE Password utilities for control of access to adapter configuration, PWSET.EXE, PWRESCUE.EXE. * All drivers included in LSS 6.1(1) support DTR (Dedicated Token Ring) mode as well as Classic Token Ring mode. SECTION 5: LSS 6.1(1) improvements and new features ==================================================== i) New CD front end program --------------------------- This release features MDGCD.EXE a front-end program for LSS 6.1(1). This program will automatically run when the CD is inserted into a Windows workstation. It allows the user to easily view the documentation, browse the CD, upgrade the installed network driver, install utilities or create driver diskettes. ii) NT 4 enabler for easy CardBus installation ---------------------------------------------- The NT4 driver includes support for CardBus adapters either via third party card and socket services software or via a built-in enabler. The built-in enabler allows for a simple installation but does not give the full range of features of thirtd party software (e.g. hot-swap, suspend/ resume). iii) PCI Hot-plug for Smart PCI Ringnodes ----------------------------------------- Drivers for Novell NetWare or Microsoft NT 4 servers are provided that support PCI Hot-plug on Compaq (or compatible) systems. PCI Hot-plug allows adapters to be shutdown, removed or replaced without bringing the whole server system down. iv) Hot-standby Server Adapter Mirroring ---------------------------------------- Drivers for Novell NetWare or Microsoft NT 4 servers are provided that offer a hot-standby server adapter mirroring feature. In the event of the failure of the primary adapter or its connection to the network, the standby adapter seamlessly takes over the workload of the primary adapter. The NDIS4 miniport driver can also be used as part of a mission critical server solution based on Windows NT. Likewise, the 32-bit ODI driver supports NetWare server versions 3.12 through 5.0. v) Unattended installation for Windows 95 and NT 4 -------------------------------------------------- The drivers for Microsoft Windows 95 and NT 4 support unattended workstation installation. Special instructions are supplied as part of LSS 6.1(1) to assist the user in setting up this capability. vi) QuickRev Upgrade utility for Windows 95, 98 and NT ------------------------------------------------------ LSS 6.1(1) includes a utility for Windows 95 and NT to simplify the upgrading of drivers. This utility enables users to upgrade to later driver versions and through a script file maintain their advance parameter settings, such as LAA and Ringspeed. This utility may only be used to upgrade between drivers written to the same version of Microsoft's NDIS specification. That is the utility only supports upgrades from NDIS3 to NDIS3 or from NDIS4 to NDIS4. QuickRev does not support upgrades from NDIS3 to NDIS4. vii) Status Viewer for Windows 95, 98 and NT -------------------------------------------- This release of LSS includes a windows-based error viewer for the Microsoft Windows drivers. This tool allows you to view details of the operational status of the adapter. For instance, if the driver fails to load, it will display an error message relating to an error code generated by the miniport driver during loading. If the driver has successfully loaded, it displays details of the adapters network connection. viii) Novell Client32 for DOS/Windows ------------------------------------- LSS 6.1(1) includes a full Client32 installation of the latest version of Novell Client32 product (version 2.20) for DOS/Windows 3.1. The Windows 95 version is no longer included.
