IBM PS/2 E (9533-GBD AND DBD) AND 340MB HARD DRIVE OPTION IBM Announcement Letter Number 193-347 dated October 28, 1993 IBM US - Last Revised on October 28, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The PS/2 (R) E (9533), supporting 340MB (million bytes) hard drives, is dramatically enhanced as a viable general purpose computer. This new 2.5-inch 340MB AT Hard Disk Drive (#9130, 70G9154), along with the PS/2 E's unique environmentally advanced, energy efficient, PCMCIA physical design attributes, allows the PS/2 E to be considered as a premium solution across most industry segments and customer requirements. The PS/2 E features a 486SLC2 50/25MHz processor, XGA-2 graphics and Plug-n-Play ("hot-pluggability" and auto-configurability) PCMCIA technology. The PS/2 E is manufactured using a variety of recycled materials (materials that are in turn recyclable) and consumes approximately one quarter of the power of a traditional personal computer. The PS/2 E is revolutionary in the evolution of desktop computing. The PS/2 E design allows it to be oriented vertically, horizontally, wall mounted, or for medialess LAN Stations, placed within a drawer. It is designed to generate little heat, consume little power and run silently, providing a friendlier end-user environment. The standard keyboard has the TrackPoint II (TM) pointing stick incorporated and supports an optional detached Numeric Key Pad providing the end user with the ability to orient it conveniently on the desktop. The PS/2 E, specifically designed to consume little power when active, and less when idle, supports the full line of Energy Efficient Monitors (9524, 9525) as well as the 9507 TFT LCD, announced in Hardware Announcement 193-168, dated June 15, 1993. The PS/2 E comes in a variety of configurations and can include 4MB to 8MB of memory upgradeable to 16MB. Configurations include a 1.44MB diskette drive with media sense, 120MB IDE hard drives (2.5-inch), 340MB IDE hard drives (2.5-inch), and four PCMCIA slots capable of accommodating four Type I or four Type II or two Type III PCMCIA 2.01 devices. A GBX model is provided so the end user can build up a system to match particular configuration requirements. The GBD model has a 340MB hard drive, a diskette drive, 8MB of memory and OS/2 (R) 2.1 preinstalled. The DBD model has a 340MB hard drive a diskette drive, 8MB of memory and DOS 6.1/Windows (1) 3.1 preinstalled. Medialess LAN Station models (1BX with an AT (R) Ethernet Adapter or 2BX with an AT 16/4 Token-Ring adapter, both fully upgradeable), are available to accommodate customers who do not need to expand beyond a single communication slot.
