The Power Series Program Pack CD-ROM ships with each system unit and contains the following software applications for AIX and Windows NT. With the exception of the CD-ROM based system manuals, these applications are normally part of the standard AIX or Windows NT preload. If a user elects to modify the contents of a preloaded system or in the event of a hardfile failure. However, this CD-ROM is also provided for backup purposes.
Power, Performance, Potential is a multi-media presentation which uses three dimensional audio and artwork-quality graphics to introduce the user to key Power Series technology and marketing messages. Since this application consumes a significant amount of hardfile space, IBM has also provided a "Remove PPP" utility which allows the user to reclaim this space for other applications.
For users that also purchase a modem with their Power Series system, a personalized version of the CompuServe WinCIM application is provided to provide quick and easy access to the CompuServe Power Series forum. Power Series product announcements, updates of system software, device drivers and other important information will be provided on this key forum which focuses on the needs of application developers and large corporate users. This software includes information about obtaining a complementary CompuServe subscription worth one month of basic services and a $15 usage credit.
In an effort to reduce desktop clutter and leverage powerful multi-media presentation tools within Windows NT, IBM has provided a CD-ROM based system manual. The "Introducing Your IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850" provides an audio/video overview of the features of the new IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 systems.
If a user elects to remove these applications from the hardfile or in the event of a hardfile failure, IBM has also provided additional software on the Program Pack to re-create the original preload image on the hardfile.
Carrying Cases
With the IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850, you also get a "Personal Carrying Cases for ThinkPad" catalog by Port, Inc. The catalog features a special line of cases designed to comfortably carry the IBM ThinkPad Power Series system. The cases offer protection against common drops and bumps, with most offering a unique shock-absorbing system that provides greater protection than simple foam padding. Cases are available in a variety of sizes and styles to satisfy individual needs and tastes. You can order the cases through IBM, at the original place of purchase or directly from Port.
These products are solely a Port, Inc., offering. IBM does not provide any warranty, including any implied warranties, for these products.

Microprocessor:
The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 systems are based on the new generation PowerPC technology in the form of the PowerPC 603e microprocessor running at 100MHz. The 603e provides integrated 32KB level one cache, floating point unit, and power management.
System Memory:
The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 implements a 64-bit memory bus architecture for enhanced performance, which is also enhanced by the standard 256KB of level two cache. Base system memory is provided by two SODIMM modules on system planar. Two 8MB or 16MB SODIMMS are used to provide the base 16MB or 32MB systems.
Memory expansion is accomplished with two ICDRAM sockets placed under the hard disk drive and the CD-ROM drive. Two ICDRAM cards of the same size must be installed to expand memory. Total system memory is 80MB or 96MB using 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, or 32MB ICDRAM cards in pairs.
Storage Devices:
The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 systems are available with three 2.5 inch SCSI-2 hard disk capacities, 540MB, 810MB, and 1.2GB. These hard disks are user removable.
All IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 systems have a built in double speed 5.25 inch SCSI-2 CD-ROM drive that is user removable.
All systems also have an external 3.5 inch 1.44MB diskette drive. This FDD can be removed from its covers and installed in the system in place of the CD-ROM. A bezel is provided for this purpose.

PowerPC 603e errata for DD1.4 indicates limitation for MTMSR (system level) instruction usage. See the processor errata for possible work arounds.
PowerPC 603e errata for DD1.4 indicates DCBZ instruction should not be used. See the processor errata for possible work arounds.
Audio functions are supported only in the operating system environment. Audio support may vary by operating system.
The power management function is implemented in the operating system environment, which will affect the expected battery life.
The system is designed so customers can install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card and operating system selected supports this function. Refer to the PCMCIA card instructions.
When the system is working under some operating systems, removal and installation of a PCMCIA card may not be supported during the power-on state.
When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only one card to be used.
Device drivers designed for x86 systems, supplied with PCMCIA cards will not execute on this system. Customer must insure that PowerPC device drivers for their operating system are available for the card.
PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Point enablers may interfere with Client Device Drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended.
Maximum data transfer rate of the built-in, double-speed CD-ROM drive is approximately 300KBps when used with the IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850.
The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector cable is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port.
When running AIX and want to use a Wacom Tablet instead of the TrackPoint III in the AIXwindow environment. Execute (rmdev -1 mouse0) at the command line before starting the AIXwindow environment.
The system can enter the Suspend mode when using a PCMCIA card with one of the following operating systems:
GEMS models are complete systems, and may include an operating system.
Build-to-Order Required Components:
