Personal Conferencing for AIX Strengths

Personal Conferencing for AIX provides multimedia real-time remote video conferencing capability for IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 mobile systems using IBM AIX Version 4 for Clients and is shipped standard with all AIX models.

Introduction:

Capabilities: Power Series Program Pack CD-ROM

The Power Series Program Pack CD-ROM ships with each system unit and contains the following software applications for AIX and Windows NT. With the exception of the CD-ROM based system manuals, these applications are normally part of the standard AIX or Windows NT preload. If a user elects to modify the contents of a preloaded system or in the event of a hardfile failure. However, this CD-ROM is also provided for backup purposes.

Essentials! is a Windows application which contains a customer registration program, a catalog of supported options and adapters and an overview of the IBM HelpWare support coverage.

Power, Performance, Potential is a multi-media presentation which uses three dimensional audio and artwork-quality graphics to introduce the user to key Power Series technology and marketing messages. Since this application consumes a significant amount of hardfile space, IBM has also provided a "Remove PPP" utility which allows the user to reclaim this space for other applications.

For users that also purchase a modem with their Power Series system, a personalized version of the CompuServe WinCIM application is provided to provide quick and easy access to the CompuServe Power Series forum. Power Series product announcements, updates of system software, device drivers and other important information will be provided on this key forum which focuses on the needs of application developers and large corporate users. This software includes information about obtaining a complementary CompuServe subscription worth one month of basic services and a $15 usage credit.

In an effort to reduce desktop clutter and leverage powerful multi-media presentation tools within Windows NT, IBM has provided a CD-ROM based system manual. The "Introducing Your IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850" provides an audio/video overview of the features of the new IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 systems.

If a user elects to remove these applications from the hardfile or in the event of a hardfile failure, IBM has also provided additional software on the Program Pack to re-create the original preload image on the hardfile.

Carrying Cases

With the IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850, you also get a "Personal Carrying Cases for ThinkPad" catalog by Port, Inc. The catalog features a special line of cases designed to comfortably carry the IBM ThinkPad Power Series system. The cases offer protection against common drops and bumps, with most offering a unique shock-absorbing system that provides greater protection than simple foam padding. Cases are available in a variety of sizes and styles to satisfy individual needs and tastes. You can order the cases through IBM, at the original place of purchase or directly from Port.

These products are solely a Port, Inc., offering. IBM does not provide any warranty, including any implied warranties, for these products.

Technical Description

The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 systems are small light-weight battery or AC-operated portable notebook computers. The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 computers are a general business solution for mobile field or desk oriented professionals that need 32-bit operating systems.

Microprocessor:

The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 systems are based on the new generation PowerPC technology in the form of the PowerPC 603e microprocessor running at 100MHz. The 603e provides integrated 32KB level one cache, floating point unit, and power management.

System Memory:

The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 implements a 64-bit memory bus architecture for enhanced performance, which is also enhanced by the standard 256KB of level two cache. Base system memory is provided by two SODIMM modules on system planar. Two 8MB or 16MB SODIMMS are used to provide the base 16MB or 32MB systems.

Memory expansion is accomplished with two ICDRAM sockets placed under the hard disk drive and the CD-ROM drive. Two ICDRAM cards of the same size must be installed to expand memory. Total system memory is 80MB or 96MB using 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, or 32MB ICDRAM cards in pairs.

Storage Devices:

The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 systems are available with three 2.5 inch SCSI-2 hard disk capacities, 540MB, 810MB, and 1.2GB. These hard disks are user removable.

All IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 systems have a built in double speed 5.25 inch SCSI-2 CD-ROM drive that is user removable.

All systems also have an external 3.5 inch 1.44MB diskette drive. This FDD can be removed from its covers and installed in the system in place of the CD-ROM. A bezel is provided for this purpose.

Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition)

In order to provide a full menu of operating systems for its Power Series family personal computers, IBM is offering Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition) from Microsoft.

Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition) is designed to fully utilize the capabilities of the Power Series family personal computers. Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition) is a complete 32-bit operating system with built in networking.

Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition) can support 16-bit DOS and Windows applications along with powerful 32-bit applications. Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition) does not require DOS or any other operating system to interface to a local area network. Advanced functions provided include networking and workgroup support, and the ability to offer a secure environment for multiple users on the same system.

Built-in connectivity and scalability are designed to support today's complex business applications with extendibility to future requirements in hardware or software.

Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition) Preload Stack

In addition to supporting powerful 32 bit operating systems on the Power Series product family, IBM has developed a unique manufacturing process for preloading each of these operating systems and a variety of other system and third party applications.

Within the Power Series program group, IBM has provided a multi-media presentation which presents an overview of the Power Series product family. This program group also contains an on-line registration application, a catalog of supported options and adapters and an overview of the world-wide IBM HelpWare service and support program.

For users that also purchase a modem with their Power Series system, IBM has also provided a personalized version of the CompuServe WinCIM application to provide quick and easy access to important information on this world-wide information service network.

In an effort to reduce desktop clutter and leverage the power of today's multi-media presentation tools, IBM has provided within the Window NT preload an interface to system multimedia documentation contained on the Power Series Program Pack CD-ROM.

Within a separate IBM Human-Centered Experience program group, IBM has provided a graphical interface to the Human-Centered Experience CD-ROM (when available). Supporting both the "Getting Started with the Human-Center" multi-media tour and "Installing the Human-Centered Experience" installation utility, this feature of the preloaded Windows NT desktop should facilitate ease-of-access to these new interface technologies.
