AIX Tip of the Week: SSA Alternative to LVM Mirroring

Audience: AIX Administrators, Managers

The new 6230 SSA adapter provides a hardware alternative to AIX LVM mirroring. The adapter, which was announced last December, provides:

• Raid 0, 1, 5, 0+1 (Striping, Mirroring, Raid 5, and Striping + Mirroring)
• Mirroring disks on two different SSA adapters
• HACMP Compatibility: Raid 1, 5, 0+1 and Write Cache

The benefit of mirroring in hardware is that it reduces the write traffic on the system bus and offloads the CPU overhead associated with LVM mirroring.
