PROCEDURE APAR IX19449 has been opened to address a problem with the backup -p (pack) option. As this flag is used in /usr/bin/mksysb shell script, it must be removed from that script prior to using mksysb. 1. Use vi to edit the mksysb file as follows: a. Type "vi /usr/bin/mksysb" and press Enter. b. In vi command mode, type ":148" and press Enter. c. Move the cursor to the "p" in the list of backup flags and press "x" to remove that flag. d. In vi command mode, type ":wq" and press Enter. 2. Set the tape drive block size to 512: a. Type "smit chgtpe" and press Enter. b. Move cursor to select tape drive and press Enter. c. If block size is not set to 512, then change it to 512 in the dialog panel and press Enter to execute the panel. How To Use mksysb For AIX 3.1.5 1 09/24/96, d. If the block size is 512, press F10 (or Esc+0) to exit smit. Before starting your mksysb, you must unmount all NFS and and CD-ROM file systems. 3. Execute the following: From the command line: a. Type "mkszfile -f && mksysb /dev/rmt0" (assuming that "/dev/rmt0" is to be your backup device), and press Enter. b. Follow the prompts. | To use smit: a. Type "smit mksysb" and press Enter. b. | Press the tab key to change the entry field to "no" for | the option "FORCE increase of work space if needed". c. Type in the full path and name of the backup device in the "Backup DEVICE or FILE" entry field. d. Press Enter to execute the smit panel and follow the prompts. 4. Verify your backup by using "restore -Tvf/dev/rmt0". This will read a "Table of Contents" from the tape and display it to the screen. For further verification, try to restore some randomly selected files from different sections of the tape(s) into a temporary directory.
