The problem is usually found when the user tries to install from 8mm system image backup tapes. This proce- dure applies to AIX 3.1 and 3.2. SUPPLIES: o Install/Maintenance diskette of the correct level o Enough temporary space to restore the Install/Maintenance diskette STEPS: You must be logged on as the root user when you perform these steps. 1. Create a temporary directory for restoring the Install/Maintenance diskette. You can replace "temp" in the command below with whatever you wish to call the directory. mkdir temp 2. Change your current working directory to the temporary directory. (Replace temp with the name you gave the directory.) cd temp 3. Restore the Install/Maintenance diskette. restore -xvq Mksysb 8mm Tape Block Size Recovery 1 09/24/96, 4. Edit the file called startup2. Search for the string "512". You should find the line in the file which says, "Make sure that all tape devices are at 512." A couple of lines later, there is a chdev command which sets the block_size to 512. Change the 512 to 1024 or whatever your block_size was when you made the system backup. Save your changes and exit the editor. 5. Re-create the diskette with the following command, typed from the directory where the diskette was restored. find . -print | backup -ivqp 6. Reboot from the bosboot diskette that you just modified. You should now be able to use the system backup tape, provided that the change to the diskette was made cor- rectly.
