QUESTION After I updated to 3.2.4, the dd command gives an "out of space" error. I didn't get this error before. What hap- pened? ANSWER The method the dd command uses to read a variable length | file was changed. (A variable length is used when the phys- | ical block size in smit is set to 0.) This has been cor- rected with APAR IX38287 which is in the U493250 PMP tape. If you do not want to update to 3.2.5, order PTF U422652. Fixes can be ordered by specific fix number from 1-800-CALL-AIX. WORKAROUNDS o Since dd now must fill its buffer EXACTLY, the use of a | bs=#### on the command line will fail unless the size | specified is at least as large as the block size on | tape. Use "tcopy /dev/rmtX" to read the tape and find out what | the actual block size on the media is. Take the largest | block size reported by tcopy and use this block size as | the value for the 'bs=' or 'ibs=' parameter to dd.
