ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT This document describes booting a sp node into the mainte- nance mode. HOW TO BOOT A SP NODE INTO MAINTENANCE MODE 1. On the control workstation, enter smit and select: 9076 SP System Management 9076 SP Configuration Database Management Enter Database Information Node Database Information Boot/Install/usr Server Information | Enter the node in either the Start Frame/Start Slot/ | Node Count fields OR the Node List field. Then, press F4 | in the "Response from Server to bootp Request" field and | select "maintenance". Make sure the last field is set to | "yes" so setup_server will run. Now that the screen is filled out, press enter. This will update the database, and run the setup_server command. 4. When it finishes, start the spmon gui with: spmon -g 5. Then select: SP Display Layouts | 6. Select the frame and node from the buttons above the | columns, and then select the node's Node Front Panel | Layout. 7. Click on Display Node Layout >From the front panel, click on Open TTY. Put the key in Secure. 8. Power off the node from the spmon node front panel and power it back on. 9. When the led's show 200, switch the key to service mode and press "reset" on the spmon node front panel. | 10. At led 260 or 262, the tty will become active and you | will see a MAIN MENU. Select the BOOT STARTUP menu | option and you will see a screen that will ask you what | interface to use. Select the appropriate ethernet | adapter for en0: either integrated "built-in" adapter on | thin nodes or the bnc adapter (most likely) on the wide | nodes. | 11. Then it will ask for the IP address of the CLIENT (the | node you are trying to boot), the SERVER (the appro- | priate Boot/Install server for the client), and the | GATEWAY (which may be left blank). If you are unsure of | the correct Boot/Install server for the client, run | "splstdata -b" on the control workstation and look at | the fourth field of the line for the client's node#. | The value in this field specifies the node_number of the How to Boot an SP node into Maintenance Mode 2 12/10/96 | Boot/Install server for that node. Be sure to use | leading and trailing zeros when entering the IP | addresses. | 12. Select 99 to save the addresses and return to the MAIN | MENU, and then select "3" to send a test transmission | ping between the client and server network interfaces. | 13. Select "4" to start the ping test. If the ping test is | unsuccessful you have a network connectivity problem or | have entered an invalid IP address. Do not proceed | until you correct the problem and receive a successful | ping test. | 14. Select "99" to go back to the main menu and select "4" | to start the System Boot. | 15. At this point, put the key in "Normal" mode (via the | spmon "Node Front Panel") and press in the tty | screen. | 16. You should see bootp packets sent and received and then | tftp packets sent and received. | 17. Soon you will see an AIX maintenance menu. Proceed as | with any AIX RS/6000 workstation. | NOTE: When you are done, be sure to set the node back to | "disk" on the control workstation.
