ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT This document describes the contents of the AIX 4.1.4 media, instructions on how to obtain the update and other appli- cable technical information. CONTENTS OF THE AIX 4.1.4 MEDIA AIX 4.1.4 Product Media The product media is bootable, and can be used to install a new system, upgrade an AIX 3.2.5 system to AIX 4.1.4, or update an AIX 4.1.1 or later system to AIX 4.1.4. This media contains the Base Operating System (BOS) Runtime Environ- ment, both as an install image and as fileset updates, updated installation images for other entitled AIX packages, such as AIXwindows and CDE, and installation images for fil- esets that are newly available in AIX 4.1.4. AIX 4.1.4 Maintenance Level The AIX 4.1.4 Maintenance Level contains fileset updates for all filesets that have changed since AIX 4.1.1, plus instal- lation images for CDE 1.0. This media can be used to update existing AIX 4.1.1 or later system to AIX 4.1.4. It does not contain installation images for filesets that are newly available in AIX 4.1.4. A minor packaging change was adopted for the AIX 4.1.4 Main- tenance level that allows existing AIX 4.1.3 customers to realize reduced installation time. Most AIX 4.1.3 customers will experience update times of less than 30 minutes. The AIX 4.1.3 ML fileset updates are, in most cases except the bos.rte filesets, packaged delta to AIX 4.1.3. This allows existing AIX 4.1.3 customers to order the AIX 4.1.4 ML yet exclude the AIX 4.1.3 filesets, providing for a smaller and faster installation package. This is accomplished by setting the service level field to 4130. Orders placed without specifying the 4130 service level will include all the nec- essary AIX 4.1.3 ML fileset updates, and allow the package to be installed on any AIX 4.1.1 or later system. AIX 4.1.4 Release 1 10/19/95 Except for decreased installation time, this packaging change has no customer impacts, since the installation process, from a customer perspective, is unchanged. TECHNICAL INFORMATION Changes in System Dump Copy Starting with AIX 4.1.4, the copydump procedure was changed to automatically copy /unix to tape following the dump image. The copydump procedure is invoked at boot time after a system crash, or can be invoked after booting from instal- lation media or a mksysb, and allows the dump to be copied to external media. The /unix image is now also copied under the following circumstances: o The target of the dump copy is a tape device. o /unix is a file, or a link to a file in the / (root) or /usr filesystems. In other cases, a warning message is issued, indicating that /unix will not be copied. However, in all cases, /unix must be submitted as part of the testcase. To extract the dump and /unix images from the tape media, use the following commands: tar -xvf/dev/rmt0.1 tar -xvf/dev/rmt0.1 The first tar command extracts the dump image. The second extracts /unix.
